Yeah, Langano doesn't exactly qualify as a "longstanding" restaurant. Maybe ten years at most? Mr. Minari was indeed in there before and I miss that place a lot. It wasn't great but it was cheap, good enough and their chef also gave my friends and I the great quote, "no more mandoo tonight."

I tried Langano a few times but it was mediocre to gross. Like others posting here, I think Abol is the best Ethiopian in SS, but I really wish they would serve their food on a large plate of injera bread, like most other Ethiopian places do. It's a major drawback, to me and others I've talked to about it, that it's just served on a plain plate. Sounds dumb, I know, but I wish they'd make that change and then I'd be totally sold.

Also, agreed that I would vote strongly to get a sit-down Greek restaurant in town.

I've been to Langano a couple of times and both times had a decent experience with pretty good food. Not as good as Addis Ababa, but quite a bit cheaper too. I noticed a high percentage of the clientele looked Ethiopian, so it has that authentic feeling.
Also one time I was out late on a Saturday night with some friends and noticed they had live music, so we stopped in - the place was packed out. There was an Ethiopian singer performing with a small band. We stayed for a while and enjoyed it (and the crowd did too).
But I guess I won't miss Langano too much. The food definitely isn't memorable.

Would be awesome if Udupi Palace were to move in where Langano is. They're losing their lease in Langley Park, and now there's some fine South Indian vegetarian cuisine that has a sizeable (and dedicated) following in the area.

Maybe time to start a signature petition....

There is a NEW Ethiopian place opening up on Georgia -- the wife and I passed it last week on our way to Pacci's.

Also agree about saying goodbye to Bombay Gaylord. The place is boring to the point of depressing, and with Ghar-E-Kabab, who needs it?

We could use a really good Greek restaurant (not the pizza parlor places we have now, but a cozy restaurant that delivers all of what you expect from a sitdown meal).

Good, now let's get rid of Bombay Gaylord as well, another legacy restaurant that is a poor excuse for an Indian restaurant. I know Indian food, and while there may be those that like it simply because it's Indian (actually, it is run by Bangladeshis, and there IS a difference - would be like Chinese cooks offering sushi), it really gives Indian food a bad name with discerning eaters. Now Ghar-e-Kabab, although run by Nepalese, does a stellar job.

After first moving to SS, my advisor told me that there was a "fairly good" Ethiopian place on Georgia. Langano was the only place I could find, so the wife and I stopped in. It was a huge disappointment. The food was meh and the service terrible. We never returned.

I was convinced he was simply mistaken, and meant some other place, as he usually had great taste in food. I asked him about it, and discovered that he meant "off Georgia," but wasn't sure where. After looking around, I found Addis Ababa on Fenton and we've been steady customers ever since. Good service and, as my advisor indicated, "fairly good" food.

I'm also fond of Arbol on Colesville, but the atmosphere isn't the best. Bete, tucked away in an old house on Roeder is also good, especially since it has a rear patio for outdoor dining (and is dog friendly).

I haven't been in years. There are so many better Ethiopian restaurants now (none of them chain, of course). There's even a new one called Bebe or something that looks much nicer. This place is a dump in comparison. It's sad to lose a long standing business but they have to keep up.
