Ironically humans are evolutionarily designed to have faith, be that in a diety or humanity. That's not to say one has to have a faith, it's just that it's unfair to blame the many for the mistake of the few.

I disagree, Washington Gardener. Any good performed by religious institutions is outweighed by their support and encouragement in the belief of an invisible deity who controls the universe, etc., ad nauseum. And that's on top of a great deal of regressive politics.

It's time the human race grew up, IMHO

SR - we all need that Baptist church and the other local ones including St Michael's who perform innumerable services for our community from free English lessons to feeding and clothing the hungry to marriage counseling and AA meetings. Should these institutions collapse or disappear, we'd be in a world of desperate hurt.

Blah. Who needs another church? I'd prefer a science center. Or better yet, a science center/bar.

Now, having pontificated, let me say that Mandalay's coconut ice "cream", served in a coconut and flown in from Thailand, is absotively amazing, especially after one of their spicier meals. (I put the "cream" in quotes because it's actually not made from milk, but is a kind of sorbet).

The restaurant sign reminds me of a Saturday Night Live "commercial" from around 1992-1993 for "Cluckin' Chicken" in which a cartoon bird takes the viewer through the entire process of raising, butchering, and preparing the chicken for a meal. At the end, the chicken's head (cut off early in the butchering process) takes a bite of it's own leg and declares, "Hey, I'm good!"

Why hasn't anyone on these SS blogs talked about the rape at the Montgomery College Performing Arts Center on GA Ave. last week? A lot of downtown was swarmed. For some reason, there were even canine units sweeping through the CVS pharmacy.

The Gazette article incorrectly (as usual) identifies all the street crossing improvements as being on Colesville Road. They are not--they are on US 29/Georgia Ave.

US 29 South changes from Colesville onto Georgia. The portion of Colesville between Georgia and the DC line is just...well...Colesville Rd.

THAT's not what they're building at the First Baptist Church site. That's the office and retail proposed before.

THIS is what they're proposing there. Much nicer than the earlier concept. I'll be sad to see the First Baptist Church go. I liked it. But I'm looking forward to what could take its place.)
