Namaste Planet Bollywood, Bienvenidos La Malinche

Thanks to J.T. for the pic!
More new restaurant news, though if you've read the comments sections of recent posts or strolled down the north side of Colesville road lately, you probably already know this:

Skid Row's Planet Bollywood is no more, but its space will soon be occupied by La Malinche a "Spanish end [sic] Mexican tapas" restaurant. I'm guessing that the lettering in the above photo was not applied by someone whose native tongue is English. At least I hope it's not, otherwise this might be worthy of joining Taste of Marocco in the pantheon of local restaurant grammar fails.

I don't have any details on the restaurant yet, but I did learn that La Malinche represents the "embodiment of treachery" in Mexico.

Nice. And non-chain tapas to boot. Suck it Bethesda and Rockville. :P

Thanks for the photo credit, Sligo (JT).

Should we start making bets on how long it will last? That location doesn't seem to keep places...

"That location doesn't seem to keep places..."

What do you mean? Sabroso was sold because of the death of the owner or something like that. I don't know why this place closed. I thought the complaint was that turnover wasn't happening fast enough on this block? Can't appease everyone, I suppose.

You mean back when this place was Across The Street Cafe? Never went to it then, never when to it when it was Bollywood. I'll be sure and go to this tapas place to ensure it has a fighting chance. I can't imagine rents are overly high on Colesville quite yet. Assuming it's good it should have no issues.

The Spanish End (or El fin espaƱolas in Spanish) is considered the butt or the unlucky end of the Mexican Tapa. Customers often try to quickly eat the El Fin Lucky (or lucky end) when their compaƱero is not looking or glancing at the Lucky End of a passing-by a turista femenino.

Um, I am a DTSS homer, but Bethesda has Jaleo. It is an inferior Jaleo, yes. But I would take that over an unproven upstart any day of the week. Even if Jaleo is a big bad "chain."

Anonymous said...

Do you not know what the ":P" symbol means?! Not that I agree - I'm cool with the upstart. If I want Jaleo, I know where to find the real (and nicely renovated) Jaleo in DC.

As do I. That said, I would be there once a week instead of once every 3 months if it were across the street from me.

Don't get me wrong. I am excited for La Malinche and will patronize it unless and until it proves to be a disappointment. But I am a little skeptical.

I had dinner at Planet Bollywood once. The staff was very nice but the food was just so-so. The Jewel of India up in New Hampshire Ave is much, much better.

Fingers crossed on the new place.

As for the typo on the sign, I had this funny thought that maybe it was like the cakes you see on the CakeWreck block. Someone called the sign shop and the person misheard "and" and "end".

Patrick Thornton said...

I was just saying the other day that Silver Spring needs a tapas place. I'll definetly be checking this place out.

Now that Skid Row has the Fillmore, it will probably be better able to attract and keep businesses. The width of Colesville does not help, however. It needs a road diet with less lanes and perhaps wider sidewalks.

That side of Colesville is separated from the rest of DTSS by a pretty unpleasant and noisy street to cross. It's not difficult to fix this, but political will is needed.

Sorry kid but having ALL non-Chain Restaurants is not ever the Smart way of improving Business/Economic Growth for any City or County...

RE: That just proves that just because some support saturating a City/Town/County with non-Chain Retail/Restaurants does not equal success in Business/Economic Growth for that City/Town/County.....

RE: Wow talk about being anti-Business for Silver Spring which would explain the biased hate for Silver Spring to measure up to the levels of Arlington, Alexandria, DC, Tysons Corner, and Reston for Attracting Upscale Retail/Restaurant Chains...

RE: Another not so good comment which will do further Harm on Business/Economic rowth inSilver Spring.

Lets say they reduce Colesville Road and Georgia Avenue down to a narrow rural 2 Lanes(1 land going one direction and the other going the opposite) if you think traffic is bad now then it will be at snails pace 7 days a week.

There were plans to build a 8-12 lane Expressway under/Above Silver Spring the folks that share your anti-Roads opinion back in the 1970's fought against it knowing that building an expressway through Silver Spring will reduce the traffic on surface streets like they have in Arlington(which is FAR More Business Friendly than Silver Spring) with I-395 and I-66.

They can remove lanes on the Main Roads in Silver Spring then result into a Traffic Nightmare since there are no expressways withing Downtown Silver Spring to bypass the main streets(save I-495 argument since I-495 bypasses downtown Silver Spring)then it will also create more drivers forcing there way into neighborhood side street which some people really hate.

The idea of reducing the existing lanes on the main roads in Downtown Silver Spring will be potentially harmful for any businesses in Silver Spring because of bad traffic and save the BS argument for Mass Transit because in reality DC area transit is nowhere near as reliable on the level of New York City/Chicago and until that happens then the Mass Transit argument is only good for the people that do not have cars and it will push for more peple in the Maryland Suburbs to continue to spend their money in DC/Northern Virginia....

Sorry sir but there is no way Silver Spring is going to be reduce to a small rural sleepy junction with non-chain small businesses with expensive condos, and narrow streets. Takoma Park will be for that type of planing which shall not and will not spread its backwards 18th Century planning into Silver Spring...

Um no. I am decidedly not anti-Business for Silver Spring. I am the self-described "DTSS homer." What makes me skeptical about this would be restaurant is its description of being "Spanish [and] Mexican tapas." Generally, if someone is truly comfortable with their food and concept, they keep it simple. Why combine these two widely divergent cuisines--other than a common language? It sounds to me like they are trying to be too much because they think it will draw in a bigger crowd--like the Cheesecake factory or Society ultralounge/sportsbar/Carribean/American restaurant. For me, I'd rather they choose one or the other and do it well.

That said, of course I am going to give the place a chance. I'm not saying it can't work. I would love it if the place was good. I just think getting too busy conceptually greatly reduces your chances.

They fixed the sign. It's now Mexican and Spanish Tapas. All is right in the world once again.

Red Maple opened a couple of days ago in Four Corners. Has anyone been?

Anonymous said...

Sorry about the typo on our sign. One thing for sure is that our food and service should make up for it :)

lilkunta said...

red maple four corners is TOO EXPENSIVE. I'm just going to continue on up 29 to White Oaj to Asian delight. The interior is nice.

Just had dinner at Red Maple. I didn't find it too expensive at all -- cheaper than Fajita Coast! Lots of entrees to be had for around $10, and delicious appetizers.

Three people had appetizers and entrees (no alcohol because they don't have their license yet) and it was $50 + tip.

The interior is really nice and the staff was pleasant. The food was good -- not incredible or amazingly authentic, but good. They have a great children's menu, their tempura was delicious, and so were the gyoza.

La Malinche just opened this weekend Went there last night and thought it was great Had sangria and several tapas. Service was fast and very friendly. pleasant atmosphere and you could have a conversation without yelling - unlike many other bar/restaurants in Silver Spring. It was on the pricey side, but I think reasonble given the quality. Sure hope it does well.
