Friday News 'N Notes

- Yeah, so about the Silver Spring Zombie Walk... For various reasons which you can read about here, it's not happening this year, though there are a few other zombie-related activities scheduled (thanks to Eric of Thayeravenue.com). Personally, I had come to the conclusion that the Zombie Walk had peaked and was struggling with ideas on how to take it to the proverbial next level. Any ideas are welcome, as there's nothing to keep us from reviving it in the future - the Zombie Walk is not dead, it's just undead. Maybe you could put the money you'll save on your costume towards decorating your lawn.

I flirted with the idea of submitting an application to the county to request that zombies be allowed to participate in this year's Thanksgiving parade in Silver Spring, but I never followed through because I am lazy and I wasn't entirely sure they'd approve it. However, if there's interest I may do it next year.

- I recently unearthed in a stack of papers an old receipt from the now-defunct Silver Spring Borders Books. To its credit, Borders kept it real and never caved to pressure from the geographically correct police, keeping "Silver Springs" atop its receipts to its dying day. Bravo to them.

 - The 6th Annual South Silver Spring Street Fest is this Saturday from 12-6.

- The former Ritz Camera location at the corner of Fenton St. & Roeder Rd. will be soon be occupied by an Hour Eyes store, which, while a tad boring, still beats an empty storefront. Surprisingly, a hair and nail salon didn't move in first. I kind of miss Ritz - it was convenient for when you just needed a small number of prints. That being said, $1.40 print orders aren't going to pay the rent.

Thanks to O.D. for the pic!

- The asking price of the revised-address Homicide House is now down to $429K. The price seems to drop $10K every couple weeks, so it should be free in a year or two.

A "dance and theatre boutique" (www.dancefootlights.com) will be opening at 938 Wayne in a spot formerly occupied by several hair and/or nail salons over the last 10-20 years. Perhaps it's not a very exciting addition, but better than an empty storefront. Also, I suspect that I'll probably be picking up my daughter's ballet supplies there from now on.

The South Silver Spring Street Fest will be a blast. I'll be there in the afternoon, and there will be alcohol outisde. So there is really no reason not to come.

Pete's Apizza is currently "looking at a lease for a space in Silver Spring."

It appears the a Jimmy John's sandwich shop is under construction at the Cameron, next to (or behind?) the also under construction SurgCenter.

Noticed that the vacancy (next to the county beer story in the Hour Eyes/Smoothie King old building) is apparently spoken for. The windows are papered over/construction ongoing/permits up, but I didn't get close enough to see what the permits said was moving in. That block doesn't (comparatively) get a lot of foot traffic so I doubt it's a restaurant.

Anyone know when the La Madeleine or Scion are opening?

Anonymous said...

aslPete's is great. Mrs. Easley Does It will be very happy.

As for the dance boutique spot, if memory serves, that used to be the location of the Universal Artificial Limb Company.

I'm not sure when Scion or La Madeleine opens, but both are under going work right now. The Scion work just started up this week I believe. Both are slated to open this fall. I'd put money on La Madeleine opening first, and Scion being a late fall opening.

We need a Sweetgreen in Silver Spring!

Anonymous said...

I believe there's a leftover few thousand sqft from the Borders->H&M transition. I would think it'd be perfect for a Sweetgreen or similar small to-go type lunch place.

Dude you are such a yuppie suburbanite these days. Where is the edge, the old-school goofballness of yesteryear? The mundane bougie lifestyle you're leading does not bode well with you.

Anonymous said...

Guess no one would mind if the Homicide House got TPed next month.

Yes to Sweetgreen!

I'm very happy to see HourEyes moving in. Had to get specs recently using my insurance and it would have been a great convenience to be able to walk to it. The one in Rockville seemed to do a lot business, too, which is good news for DTSS.

Maybe my eyes aren't so good, read above, but I failed to read where the Zombie Walk is off. Even if it is, it can still be organic. Nothing illegal about a bunch of people who happen to show up in the same place wearing costumes and then going for a walk.

MC Police looking for a suspect in a seemingly odd kidnapping attempt at the DTSS McDonald's:

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I heard about that "kidnapping." The adult had to have known the kid, right? There's just no way you do that without it being targeted, for whatever reason. Obviously dragging some kid around at 1:30 in the afternoon in the middle of a highly populated area isn't going to work. My guess is it was a disgruntled relative or neighbor or something. Kid had to have pissed off the wrong cranky guy.

There's are signs that say "Coming soon - La Malinche - tapas in Silver Spring" on the windows of Planet Bollywood (RIP) on Colesville.

Anonymous said...

@Anon Friday 11:06 am

Reading off from the permits, it appears part of the space will be occupied by Cricket wireless, while the other is still unknown.

Tapas? Nice!

Per My Line is Red, Starbucks is opening a new location at the Sheraton (old Crowne Plaza) on 8777 Georgia Avenue. Apparently Starbucks is closing tons of locations across US, but actually adding more of them to DTSS? Cool.

Literally just Thursday as I was walking past the new Hour Eyes, I was thinking..."I'd love it if DTSS had a tapas joint."

This makes me very happy. Won't miss Planet Bollywood. I wish it would take Bombay Gaylord with it.

Dunkin Donuts is now open.

Hour Eyes, Footlights, Pete's APizza, Jimmy John's, SurgCenter, La Madeleine, Scion, H&M, Cricket, La Malinche, Starbucks, and Dunkin Donuts. Look at all those new stores just mentioned in this single post. Talk about RETAIL FAIL. :P

Anonymous said...

The idea that "retail fail" exists in Silver Spring, but not places like Bethesda, has always been a bit laughable. I remember reading a copy of Bethesda magazine some months ago while at my barber, and it reported that there something like a couple dozen retail closings in the downtown Bethesda area in 2011. Of course, most closings resulted in a new store opening in its place, and the same is true in DTSS.

Anonymous said...

Im happy about all these openings but still curious as to how all these wireless stores stay in business.

Very odd nowadays when you can get a cell phone anywhere.

I guess its similar to how Apple Stores stay in business.

Re: cell phone stores

I have no idea, but they always seem to be really busy inside. I always suspected that a lot of people pay their bills at the store.

I really hope the poster who says that Jimmy Johns is coming to DTSS is right!!! My husband and I usually drive to the one in College Park when we want our JJ fix. After living in Champaign, IL (the home of Jimmy John himself) for 2 years, it was crazy to move to DC and find that there were no Jimmy Johns anywhere.

Anonymous said...

I for one liked Planet Bollywood- they were around for a long time and they were nice people with decent food.

Never picked up business but they were FAR better than Bombay Gaylord.

Anonymous said...

FYI there are 9 Jimmy John's in the DC area.

If that isn't damning with faint praise.

I'll shed some light on mobile phones and stores because this is my area of expertise.

Almost everyone will have a mobile phone moving forward. Smartphones are the new personal computers. The first real personal computers.

Even homeless people have mobile phones and use them to stay in touch with family, friends and to manage appointments. Mobile phones are the first, and sometimes only, computer for many people in the developing world (and for some people in the U.S). We even see people in poor parts of Africa that don't have electricity but they do have mobile phones (they pay someone in town to charge their phones for them).

U.S. cell carriers make good money, which why you see their stores everywhere. AT&T, Verizon, etc. get to lock you into a two-year contract for upwards of $100 a month (and maybe more). People are constantly buying new phones, getting their phones fixed, adding minutes to prepaid phones (a big market in urban areas), etc.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't expect to see less cell carrier stores anytime soon, and I don't think they're particularly great for urban areas because most people don't need to use them in a given week or month. You buy your phone (and many get theirs online) and you don't return to the store until something goes wrong or you need a new phone. So, while a lot of people will set foot into a cell carrier store, you usually don't have to do it very often, which isn't great for an area looking for street vitality.

I don't know how many people are paying their phone bills in store, but many are buying additional minutes on prepaid phones. Prepaid phones involve people buying a phone outright with no contract and loading minutes onto it as needed, which is great for people of limited means. Get a cheap, durable phone and put minutes on it as needed and when you have money. These phones are very popular at the low end of the market, with elderly people and, unfortunately, with gangbangers looking for a disposable and untraceable phone.

Cue the Breaking Bad intro.

Sligo said...

Walt, why do you have a second phone?

Anonymous said...

Cell phone stores suck. Really ruin the area.

Anonymous said...

Looking over the list of stores: see worthless cell phone stores, more coffee joints even though we have some already, but no bars.

How odd. Its almost like you cant open a good bar around here. I guess since Babes left the area is just proven to not be able to support a sports bar.

Buffalo wild wings would even work at this point.

Anonymous said...

lol, yay for steve, the kid obsessed with BWW!

Anonymous said...

I agree. It doesnt matter what it is - why is there not a good sports bar around here?

Anonymous said...

Fire Station 1 is the closest we have to a sports bar. Lots of TVs at least. The atmosphere is too kitchy for my tastes though.

Anonymous said...

Fire station one. That says it all
