US Postal Service not Abandoning Downtown Silver Spring Altogether

With all of downtown Silver Spring's post offices closing, it looked as if a bustling urban residential and commercial area might be left without easy access to a constitutionally-mandated service that Americans have come to expect since the founding of our country. The USPS's initial recommendation to residents was to simply use the post office in Four Corners, an impractical option for many.

The solution they ultimately arrived at is marginally better, though still not particularly convenient. According to a sign posted at the current post office, the Silver Spring branch will be relocated to 8653 16th Street, most recently occupied by something called "Dollar Power". This space is at the far end of the 16th street strip mall, and while the location may be closer to downtown, it isn't easily accessible by foot - particularly for those who might be lugging packages to be shipped. The official close date for the existing location is May 12th, and the new post office will open two days later.

Small upside: It's an excuse to eat at the nearby Popeye's.

H/T to reader TM for the tip and photo.

I'd love to see a small post office stuck in a vacant City Place storefront. One would think that'd be really inexpensive, at least for the time being.

This effing sucks. One of the freaking reasons I moved to Silver Spring was the ability to do pretty much everything without a car. Now every trip I have to make is a 40 minute commitment just in travel time.

That would be the Catholic chicken: Pope-yes!

Popeyes > Ethiopian food. Fact.

Yes! Such a better option than hauling it out to Four Corners. It is still close by. The Dollar Store closed several months ago along with Block Buster. FYI, The Van Go bus goes right up 16th street, and it's FREE. Also a gret Mex/Salvadorian restaurant right next door.

I don't know why the post office at Four Corners has stayed open when the Silver Spring station at First St was closed. The Four Corners location is a bear to get into and out of, the parking lot is tiny, it's dark and grimy, and the hours are awful.

Hmmm, good point. I hadn't thought of that (having never actually used the Van Go).

Not only a Popeye's but that great seafood place.

Good....let them close the post offices. Fact is its an out-dated bloated orgonization that itself is also quite bloated.

Fact is, they dont attract enough business to remain profitable. You need to mail a package? do what I do, mail it at your job, near your job or on your way TOO your job.

good ridance, maybe they will lower stamp prices too...one can only hope

Say hey, is the Post Office on Colesville tucked in the office building next to McDonalds still open? Wonder if it will stay open.

Sligo said...

If it's not closed down yet, it will be. That was on the list of closures that was published awhile back.

The one next to McDonald's is still open, I was just there this morning. Good thing too because I would have never heard the end of it if my Mother's Day card didn't get there on time! This is the only time of year I actually go to the post office and the stamp was 45 cents! When did that happen?

I really hope that the closing of the post office near the McDonalds/7-11 does not happen for a while. I was there yesterday (and go about once a week) and saw no signage about closing. It's much more convenient for walkers than the 2nd Ave location was anyways. I can't imagine that the space will be filled easily once the post office moves away, since it really is tucked away and inaccessible for drivers.

They just announced that a lot of the post offices that were on the chopping block will NOW STAY OPEN. I am pretty sure the one on colesville is going to be saved. They are cutting full time positions to part time in order to stay open.

Mike said...

Isayaah, the PO is talking about that action for rural post offices, which Colesville is not. So I wouldn't count on it being saved.

This still sucks less than H&M opening in DTSS.

Here's the list of post offices being saved:

http://about.usps.com/news/electronic-press-kits/our-future-network/assets/pdf/postplan-affected-post-offices-120509.pdf

Some of the names are not particularly descriptive, but I didn't see anything that seems to describe the SS/Finance Center/Colesville post office.

I dont use it but can we keep the post office and close that ghetto Mcdonalds?

Enough of the drug dealing clowns and assorted trash in this neighborhood having a hang out spot.

Really? I thought that McD's got better after the reno. Not that I've ever gone within 20 feet of it (I'm able to pay more than $1 for my burgers, thank you), but from across the street it appears there is less loitering (I sincerely doubt there's any sort of drug dealing issue considering about 100K people walk within eyesight of that corner every day).

WashingtonGardener said...

The Van GO does NOT go "right up 16th Street" - it goes up 1 block on 16th (after turning from Rt 410) then turns on Spring and next turns down 2nd and crosses Colesville to go on to the metro.

It SHOULD adjust its route to go into the center and to the USPS when the post office moves. I doubt though that will happen unless dozens of us choose to complain.

Anonymous said...

Trust me, the McDs renovation has done nothing to reduce the loitering/ghetto trash. On a more positive note, I pass by there at least twice a day and have never seen any drug dealing.

Also, the 7-11 has a major mouse problem right outside of its doors.

Slightly off topic, but I noticed today that they have been planting trees on top of the ill-starred transit center. If there is any chance that they will need to remediate the concrete or worse, this makes no sense at this time.

Anonymous said...

Meh, I'm not worried about one or two people spending an hour pulling out a few lollipop trees compared to many weeks of dissembling expensive escalators. Not to mention, would you prefer FP to cease working on the site until it's out of limbo? I very much am glad they're wrapping up the work so that it can proceed to final inspection ASAP if it's found that it doesn't need to be demoed.

Went to the new post office last weekend. Awful location. It appears to be smaller than the old post office. There's more parking, but the Spring Center is crowded a lot, so you may have to walk a ways to the post office. I wonder why they could not have moved to that empty building on the opposite side of Spring Center? Seems like that would have been a much better location for a post office for DTSS.

Anonymous said...

Yup, they should have taken the former blockbuster location. A lot more convenient and easier to access w/ plenty of space for sorting, PO boxes, and customer frontage.

Anonymous said...

yes the Van Go does stop right near there when you can get it but lately the waits for the Van Go have been 45 minutes between buses - outrageous!

When it comes to being a courier, it's not all just driving around listening to music and tossing a couple of parcels by means of doors. Taking on courier jobs implies taking on the responsibility of a way of life that needs discipline, dedication and stamina.view this link

The PO has worked fine for me. actually it's better for the population that lives across the st from the strip mall
