Silver Spring News 'N Notes

- Four Corners Tex-Mex restaurant Fajita Coast is closing, reportedly due to repeated conflicts with the landlord of the retail strip in which is located. Unconfirmed rumors have it eventually moving to the old Mayorga space on Georgia Avenue.

- Silver Spring's Woodmoor neighborhood was profiled last week in Post's regular "Where We Live" feature.

- United Therapeutics has plans to add street-level retail to their Spring Street headquarters building and has solicited suggestions from residents of the adjoining Woodside Park neighborhood. The types of businesses which would be viable there might be limited, as the location is somewhat removed from the foot traffic of the core of Silver Spring. There's plenty of parking, at least. One popular suggestion thus far has been the ever-coveted Busboys and Poets. Sorry, but the owner is far to self-righteous and hypocritical to open a location here.

- The Silver Spring ice rink will be offering free skating tomorrow night from 6-8PM.

-  Silver Spring has been dubbed a "record paradise".

Thanks to VC and AN for their respective tips.

I workout at the LA Fitness on Cameron, United Therapeutics should put in a smoothie shop, would do killer business. Yes I know there's a Smoothie King off of Fenton but who wants to cross Colesville when they can walk down Cameron.

We were just at Fajita Coast last weekend and JJ, the MaƮtre de, told us that they were planning to move down to the downtown SS location. I'm hoping that's the case. If they close I'll be extremely sad. It's one of our favorite places to hit up in Silver Spring.

The loss of Fajita Coast is just terrible for our Four Corners neighborhood. It is a really good local joint that we can walk to -- on any given night, you are bound to run into your neighbors there.

My understanding is that the owner of the building has made life quite difficult for his tenants there, even going so far as to tow Fajita Coast customers from the lot to make room for customers for his own businesses that use the same lot.

It makes me wonder if he has something else planned for that space or wants to open something of his own.

Never been to Fajita Coast, but I'm certainly excited by the prospect of the Mayorga space being filled. 1 new apartment building has just come online a block away and another 2 within a block are under construction so hopefully Fajita Coast can tap into that momentum/increased foot traffic.

Shalal is a terrible douchebag and is the type of person that a Busboy would attract anyway. Self righteous and annoying.

As for Fajita coast, good news if they are moving downtown.

It would be great if something moved into that Mayorga space. Fajita Coast might fight the bill. If the place is good, I'd probably be there a lot.

We could, ironically, use a coffee shop in South Silver Spring again. Mayorga ran into a very unfortunate stretch of construction making it hard for people to get there. Now that there are lots of new buildings and people in South Silver Spring, there is a lack of coffee shops.

I heard they were moving in to the "Babes" space -- not sure if Babes is still there and open but there was talk of a roofdeck so that wouldn't be the Majorga space.

Babe's is still there. Also- I think Mayorga had more issues than just an unfortunate issue with construction, but perhaps I'm just a former employee who had unfortunate issues with them!

Which business in that strip does Shalal (or whoever the landlord is) own? I will make sure that they don't ever see a penny from me if they chase off our favorite spot there.

As a Four Corners resident we are really going to miss walking Fajita Coast! Such a great place to take the little ones too. I would love to know who the landlord is! The host told us this past Saturday that they would be moving to East West and Georgia, so maybe that is the Mayorga spot. They are always busy and have great food so the downtown Silver Spring folks are gaining a great place!

At least one person on the Northwood/Four Corners listserv wrote that the owner said they were moving into Babe's spot. The move is several months away, at least. We'll see.

I believe the landlord is the guy who owns that small Fresh Greek Cafe next to Fajita Coast. Apparently he owns a lot if not all of that strip of buildings along Colesville.

I'm a poet, but there is nothing special about Bustboys & Poets. A cluster fu** of hipster self righteous assholes and wait staff who stiffly walk as if they have bull**** lodged up their asses. Shalal can keep his pretention in DC and PG County for all I care! Fajita Coast is a familiar four corners landmark and it will be strange to not have it there anymore. Never been there though, maybe I'll try it before it leaves. When businesses move, they tend to go downhill in quality. At least that's been my experience. I love the United Therapeutics development, very original and eye-catching. The only retail that would work would be a small deli, bakery, small boutique, etc.

Is there an official closing date for Faijita Coast?

I'm extremely bummed about this.

Best chips and salsa ever!!!

there's nothing wrong with hipsters! We are people too.

You're just jealous because you don't have our money and our trust funs to let your inner bohemian express yourself.

The guy who owns the building where Fajita Coast is located is absolutely loathed by the business owners. He is a first-class jerk. He takes great delight in having customers towed which, of course, is bad for all of the businesses. I welcome Fajita Coast. Decent drinks and food. Not outrageously priced. Good place for a drink after work or to bring the family on a Friday night.

An Apple Store in the United Therapeutics space...if it is large enough. Seems like a nice "high tech" fit.

It's nice that United Therapeutics is considering community input for its retail space, but I wish they had bothered to ask for suggestions from residents of the nearby apartment buildings. (Maybe they did, but as a resident of one of them, I haven't heard anything.) Residents of the Cameron and Cole Spring Plaza are potentially major customers of whatever retail goes in that space. I get that nobody likes to ask renters for their opinion, since we're seen as being transient, but a large percentage of residents in these two buildings are young and have significant disposable income.

A BB&P in that space would be great (issues with Andy Shallal aside, I really love their food) and would provide a good place for people to congregate before/after shows at the Fillmore. I just hope whatever does go in that space isn't some crappy Skew Works-style place destined to close after 4 months.

Andy Shallal should be deported.

You're all completely ignorant about Andy Shallal. I'm surprised to find such adolescent anti-intellectual nonsense in Silver Spring.

Being a hipster artist and anti war protester makes you an intellectual? Automatically? Who knew.

I read this and the Fresh Greek Grill is struggling.

Is this person, Yannis Mereos, the one who is towing cars?

Are there people in the world who are actually "anti-intellectual" ? lol what does that mean? The insults on this blog are hiliarous to me.

Fajita Coast is open and doing very well at their new location! I've been a loyal customer for years and the new space is great! It is on East West Highway where Babe's Sports Bar used to be. Still just as kid/family friendly as ever, but has 2 floors, one with a larger bar and a huge patio that is going to be wonderful all Spring and Summer. There is a convenient parking garage right down a side street across from the restaurant that is free by 6:30 every night!!!

I was told by JJ the owner of Fajita Coast he loved the landlord he never said anything bad about the family that owns the strip. JJ told me his patner at Fajita Coast lost his home and everything.
JJ was lucky to find a new patner in the Downtown. Fajita is a big spot for a sole owner.
I wish him the best of luck Downtown Silver Spring.
I eaten at the new location twice its good to eat on a week night.

Thee reason Fajita coast moved was because the owner would not let them have a dance club after 10 on the weekends.

I am going to miss Fajita coast with the mice dropping and the broken up tile in the dining room.
