Friday News 'N Notes
- Chipotle is moving into the Video Outlet Subway space in the Woodmoor Shopping center, while the purveyor of five dollar foot longs is moving to another spot in the same complex*. The odd man out in this game of musical chairs is the China House restaurant. While I haven't eaten there in years, in my youth I consumed innumerable orders of Kung Pao chicken and egg drop soup from this establishment. (Eventually it was supplanted by Oriental East.) Longtime residents may remember that before they remodeled, China House used to have this dark, opium den-ish old school and featured an odd little booth in the corner where you placed your takeout order.
*With Santucci's just steps away, why would you ever bother going to Subway for sandwiches?
- Not sure if this is anything beyond a concept, but this firm's site has some images of a redesigned downtown Silver Spring Safeway in the imaginary neighborhood of Fenton Village.
- The Planning Department today installed temporary park space in a parking spot along Ellsworth Drive to promote public spaces in urban areas. That's nice and all, but here's an idea: close Ellsworth Drive to traffic permanently.

And here's a Zapruder-quality video of Lewis Black's monologue at Tuesday's Fillmore VIP event.

That Safeway would be sweet, but I can't imagine it happening in the next 10-15 years considering the recent interior reno.
I'm not so sure about it taking 10-15 years for something like this to be developed. If Safeway thinks this project plan will be profitable, to hell with the store's recent interior redo (which was nothing impressive to begin with).
I was at that Georgian Towers rooftop shindig. My biggest fear with Sushi Girl was to not lose grip of a piece with the chopsticks and have it land in her crotch or crevice.
I still have the jumbo orange Georgian Towers towel that was included in the swag bags they passed out.
I agree with Anon 2:56--the money Safeway spent to renovate the existing store is a tiny fraction of the potential profit/revenue from a redeveloped site with a much larger store and 160 market rate apartments on top of it. I just wish they would go taller and put more units there, but I'm not sure they can given the height limits this far away from Georgia Ave. Either way, I very much hope this project moves forward.

Answer:Cleanliness.
Next time you're in Santuccis, go back to the coke machine and look over the counter where they have the straws and lids. If the foul floor and generally gross surfaces don't make you think, maybe the mouse trap on the floor will. And hey, I like their food but can't take it anymore. PLEASE re-do that place just to get it clean.
O no not China house!!! Memories

For some reason that makes me want to eat at Santucci's even more.
As if yet another Chipotle is needed, they have been springing up like weeds in the last few years, especially in the District. Probably just a knee jerk reaction with Qdoba moving into West Tech Village, which is seconds away from another Chipotle. As far as Safeway goes, if Wheaton gets a new one, why can't Silver Spring.
The Cherry Hill Chipotle is to far for me and the one in DTSS can be a pain for carry out. Four Corners is perfect.
Would this Safeway be in the same spot or is this another corner?
Oh and aside from cleanliness Santucci is a real a**hole to both customers and his employees. Ive seen it in action and was appalled.

Same spot, just a better and more efficient use of the site.
Amusing to see anyone who orders or enjoys takeout crappy chinese food criticizing Subway.
I'll take bland over disgusting thank you.

FWIW, I may eat Chinese food once a year these days.
Hey...I have to disagree.
I love Santucci's.
Comparing it to Subway is like comparing Morton's to Ponderosa.
The guy who owns it always seemed kind of gruff to me until I ran into him in the line at Bank of America once...he's a really nice, friendly guy, just quiet.
What I love about the new Filmore: It seems that an infusion of actual attractive women is showing up in the DTTS area. Something this place sorely needs.
