Friday News 'N Notes

- The Fillmore Silver Spring is no longer just a hole in the ground fronted by a facade - it has now started to take the form of the music hall it will ultimately become. Check out a set of construction pics recently posted on Facebook.

- The Gulf station parking lot continues to be the epicenter of food truck activity in downtown Silver Spring. Here's the scene last Friday, where there were at least three active trucks (and one inactive) parked there at lunchtime.

Photo via Twitter user @coderbrown.

- Most amusing street name in Silver Spring: Bieber Place.

- Thayeravenue.com offers a quick look at the newly-opened Charm Thai, which replaced the short-lived Mr. Chicken restaurant on Georgia Avenue. (Good news: they deliver)

- While Shitty Place continues to rot, Wheaton Plaza is adding retailers like H&M. Wheaton can support this kind of store, but Silver Spring can not?

I'm beginning to think Shitty Place's only function is as some sort of corporate write-off, passed along from company to company when it outlives its usefulness. When the sale to Petrie Ross Ventures happened four years ago, the chairman of the company claimed they had "an exciting merchandising plan to create a prime destination for shoppers as well as current and future retailers.” Obviously, that particular plan was never implemented. Last summer it was bought by Hutensky Capital Partners, and they haven't done squat either. Unless Westfield or another real mall company buys it, nothing will ever change.

- Pacci's gets a rec in Bethesda Magazine.

- Finally, please refrain from having emergencies in Downtown Silver Spring until further notice.

Bieber may be the most amusing, but the dumbest name by far is East West hwy. I live on it and am embarrassed when I give the address to relatives because it sounds like we live on a remote highway in the desert or something. That's the best MoCo or the State could do? East (dash) West Highway... really? Name it after one of the Blairs, or even the Lee's. How about Duncan road after the man who basically resurrected Silver Spring from oblivion? Anything better than what it is called currently.

you can see shitty place from some of the pictures on the rooftop of the fillmore......and it's ruining the skyline.

I've lost hope it in becoming something more than a dump.

I think that if we are going to have an intelligent discussion regarding the retail opportunities currently represented by City Place Mall we should look at who the tenants are and the overall impression given by the Mall. When we do this what we see is...oh sweet Jesus that place is a dump! Dang, I've seen malls in George Romero movies look more attractive.

I say demolish the Colesville/Fenton front (the Hechts side is historic, so okay, fine), and build something useful. Maybe even do something completely different and split the lot up. I heard that was illegal to do in the county or something. Weird.

In 2002, Wheaton mall was just as bad as City Place. Granted I don't think Wheaton is that great of a mall but it does have some decent stores. Wheaton mall was transformed when Macy opened a new store and Target got into the mix. Since then better retailers have opened. Old Navy even came back. Maybe City Place needs a true anchor to class up the joint.

If you guys think City Place is bad, come to Laurel Mall. At least City Place has stores in it. Laurel mall is completely void of stores minus a Post Office and a couple of nail shops. Department stores will never come to downtown silver spring people, give it up. There is NO NEED FOR ONE. Do you guys realize how close Wheaton mall is? Do you realize the dimensions/size of City Place does not support a major department store besides that thrift store, oops I mean Burlington Coat Factory. City Place is not needed any longer, much of the metropolitan area has DE-MALLED itself, downtown silver spring in itself is an OXYMORON having a modern main street anti-mall theme with Ellsworth, and an old fashioned indoor mall right next to it. What is needed is a drastic complete change of use, there is no need for a 5 story monstrosity of a mall, instead, a HOTEL needs to occupy City Place, gut it out on the non historic side and may be build a few extra floors. We could have a nice beautiful Embassy Suites or Double Tree Hotel.

Do we need another hotel in DTSS? Isn't there one being built along with the new transit center?

I agree that we do not necessarily need a mall, but we do need good stores, and the existing mall can serve that function. Why can't we have a decent place to buy clothing or household goods?

Personally, I'd love to see a bowling alley built somewhere in DTSS -- maybe in the basement of Shitty Place?

Went to the new Thai place today, really, really good. Food great and service excellent. Go and try it. I sure hope they make it.

I dunno - tried the beef and basil and pad thai there. They really tone down the flavor, seems to be VERY Americanized. If I need a crazy Thai fix I might go there... If the Thai market down the street is closed... OR I'll head up to Nava Thai instead. *sigh*

RE: Uh, Perhaps you have not been to Silver Spring because if you had you would know that Silver Spring already have an outdoor town center like Bethesda Row called Elsworth..

As for City Place they need to Push Harder to attract the same owners that operate Pentagon City Mall and Ballston Commons Mall.....

RE: Terrible Idea...

Push for an owner that will dedicate attracting New Upscale Retail to that Mall and push for the planned 8 Story Office Building on top of City Place.......

RE: The only thing that got out of your commentating is that you Hate Silver Spring...

Why do you feel soo offended of the possibility of Silver Spring attracting an Upscale Indoor Shopping Mall like Pentagon City and Ballston Commons....

Pentagon City Mall, Ballston Commons Mall, and Crystal City Underground are less than 10 miles apart and is not suffering from vacancy like City Place....

The problem is people like you that hate for Silver Spring(suburban Maryland) to have the same Upscale Development like Northern Virginia possibly due to fear that Suburban Maryland may out pace Northern Virginia in Upscale Retail and Business Growth, then there are the lawmakers that were bought by the anti-Growth Extremist Groups that pass anti-Growth Laws that makes it very hard for Massive Upscale Retail and Big Business Development to scatter throughout Suburban Maryland like Northern Virginia......

Weird Virginia-worshipping anonymous person, your ideal of a mall is Ballston Commons? Have you ever been there? Apart from the Rock Bottom Brewery and the presence of reliable improv comedy, it blows. Every woman I know calls it a ghetto mall and they're right. I'm not saying City Place is better in that regard, but to hold up Ballston Commons as something to which we should aspire? No more blog commenting for you until you straighten up and fly right.

For what it's worth, Ballston Common > all other malls simply for the fact you can go watch the Capitals practice there.

Isn't that how all the unpleasantness started at Raccoon City?

Hmmm...two things I wouldn't mind having in Silver Spring...so I guess since City Place has neither it blows...harder..???

So we've gotten to the point where people here actually think Silver Spring City Place is nicer than Ballston Commons OR less ghetto?

Please. I know delusion can be a hallmark for some posters around here (ie. Silver spring has an excellent bar scene and an excellent night life) but this is too much. And the argument was that Ballston was too GHETTO? Yeah compared to City Place? Awesome.

Anonymous said...

@ Anon 8:37

No, the argument was not that City Place was better/less ghetto than Ballston Commons. It was that City Place should not view Ballston as a goal to be like. Trust me, I've lived and frequented both and Ballston is marginally better and that is due to Kettler and some bars (which really aren't even that good). Sure, there are some chain stores in there, like VS, Macy's and other, but they are pretty much agreed to be some of the worst examples of those chains. Plus Ballston is infinitely larger, hence its ability to host a Macy's. City Place does not have the retail square footage that modern dept stores require so a major anchor store will not think twice about the location. If any comparison is to be made, I'd compare to City Place to Wheaton Plazza before it's renovation where there might be a few things and stores or restaurants get used. Like Triple S said, until you get a major mall retailer to take over the operation rather than passing hands as often as it has in its relatively short existence with no real investment, it will continue to suck and not become your paragon of mall existence like Ballston *eyeroll*

Justafed said...

So I think we still need to give the new owners of City Place some time. They do a lot of turn-around jobs, and this might be their most ambitious (hence risky) project yet. It is a given that the current retail mix is a loser, and I also think the store sizes are likely too small for what would work best there, so things are going to get more vacant and worse before they turn around. I don't know when the big "anchor" leases (pun intended) are up, but if you see em give Burlington the heave-ho, you will know they are serious about this.

The Colesville and Fenton fronts need to be opened up and more inviting--something like what was done in DC to the citadel that was Mazza Galleria. I expect this would be more difficult, given the elevations and weird interior design of Shitty Place--but open storefronts are just more inviting and help bring in foot traffic from the street. Of course...are the stores in there even WORTH visiting?

Oh Hell, just blow it up!
