Holy Crêpe!

Huzzah! Crêpes have finally come to Silver Spring!

A crêperie has been near the top of my Silver Spring wish list for years, and now news comes via SoCo Eats that a crêpe-focused cafe has opened for business at 8311 Fenton Street. While I had been aware that some manner of restaurant was coming to this location, the generic name of "Fenton Cafe" provided no hint that the establishment's primary offering would be these thin and delicious pancakes.

Until now, my primary crepe supplier had been a cart at the Fenton Street Market. Of course, that limited my crepe window to a few hours a week during warmer months. Needless to say, at the earliest opportunity I intend on hitting Fenton Cafe and terminating some Nutella-filled crêpes with extreme prejudice.

The only downside to this development is that my pipe dream of operating a combination gelateria/crêperie in Silver Spring now seems that much less viable.

So I hit the Fenton Cafe for a dessert crêpe these evening, ordering my usual: banana and Nutella. I'm happy to report that it was in fact quite good, and as a bonus the people running the place are extraordinarily friendly.

Currently they close around 8 to 8:30, and I made it in just under the wire. I suggested that they consider extended hours during the summer to cater to the after-dinner crowd.

Here's a scan of their menu. There are a quite a few offerings listed here I intend to sample over the coming months. Crêpelicious, indeed.

If the friendliness of the owner is anything to go by, this place will be a hit! When I mentioned my inability to eat wheat, he said he'd look into 100% buckwheat crepes for folks like me, and offered an espresso on the house. Fenton Crepes, welcome to the neighborhood!

This place is a block and a half from my house. So much for swimsuit season. . .

This is excellent news! I can't wait to go eat there. A Crepery is exactly what Silver Spring needs.

I feel so left out here. I don't even know what a crepe is or even how to put a carrot above an 'e'.

Can a place really survive just serving crepes? I'm guessing it is a rather niche group.

Yes, Virginia it certainly can! You may have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age, and by those who think a crepe is just a dessert and that sandwiches can only be made on white or wheat bread! Not believe in crepes? You might as well not believe in paninis or hot dog buns! Did you ever see millions of Europeans who eat crepes for breakfast, lunch or dinner? Of course not, but that's no proof that it doesn't happen or that it can't happen in Silver Spring. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders that are possible in a good creperie. If we are lucky, a thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, we will continue to enjoy the delicious crepes from this new cafe. Let us all wish them well.

P.S. Apologies to Francis Pharcellus Church

Well, damn... I just moved out of Silver Spring last week, and now this.

Well, I'll probably be back sometime over the spring/summer and will have to check the place out.

Just went there this afternoon. Was a bit underwhelmed. Hoping that it is just some kinks to work out. The first crepe I tried to order (sauteed spinach), they couldn't make because they were out of some ingredient. So I ordered a chicken and pesto one (#1 on the menu) but was charged for #2 (more expensive). The crepe I did get was a bit bland. They need to tweak the seasoning because, obviously, it is pretty hard to do so yourself after the crepe is put together. I mean, it was fine...but nothing great. Especially considering that and a can of coke cost $8.95.

I wish them luck, and I will probably try again (maybe the sweet are better) but initial thoughts are...meh.

God help us if they start their own food truck.

I went there this evening and got a spinach and swiss cheese crepe which sounds kind of bland but is exactly what I was in the mood for and it tasted great. My husband got the #1 - it's seasoned with pesto and it was pretty tasty. For dessert I got the classic lemon and sugar crepe. I'm so glad they use granulated sugar for that instead of powdered sugar. And fresh squeezed lemon juice. It was perfect. Nutella is next.

They've only been open for four days and it seems like they are still in the process of finding their rhythm and becoming more efficient, but they are really nice and I hope they do well.

On a completely unrelated note, I just noticed that the Office Depot in DTSS prints the store location as "Sliver Spring" on their receipts.

Has this been ranted about before?

I assume you mean "Silver Springs", and that's just what I've come to expect. I believe Borders does the same thing.

No, I mean "Sliver Spring."

This was a new one for me.

I haven't bought anything at that store for years, and I don't recall the error from before. But I did a doubletake when I saw it last week.

I shopped at Office Depot last week, and yes! my receipt has it as Sliver Spring as well. Probably located near Silver Springs...

Wow - this is great. Always dreamed that a "Magic Pan" type place would be revived in the area somewhere and here it is in my own backyard. Now, if someone would just open a "Roy Rogers" in Silver Spring, all would be perfect.

Definitely need to get out of my house and get some crepes!

Stopped by on Saturday evening for the #9 while my wife had the #12 on the savory menu. She'd wanted the #11, but they were out of eggplant. It was near closing time, so we can't complain too much about that. Both were very tasty. We shared a banana, honey, and almond powder sweet crepe for dessert. Also good.

The people operating it were extremely nice and my 2 year old daughter enjoyed watching the crepes get made. Definitely will return.

Went there with the wife recently around 9 p.m. Delicious. I had a nutella, coconut, and banana crepe, and they gave us a maple syrup crepe on the house! Very friendly people there too. Will definitely be coming back!

Went there yesterday morning. Had a honey, banana, and almond powder and my fiancée had coconut, banana, and nutella. Both were wonderful. The cash register was broken when we walked in, which increased the wait slightly, but not horribly and the transaction on my credit card went smoothly (only the actual cash register was broken, not the card reader). Even with the minimal addition to wait time, the staff were all very apologetic and very quick to please. I'll definitely be back!

Has anyone else tried the new kathi roll (think Indian flatbread street food) at the gas station on Colesville and Georgia?

Pretty tasty and only $4. The brothers running it are super nice as well. I wish them luck.

I had crepes at this location last night, I tried the chestnut spread with strawberries, my gf had the maple syrup one. they were both very good..unlike other places, they use real grade A maple syrup not the sugary syrup. Some of the ingredients are organic, service is very friendly and fast, and if you are lucky you may get a free crepe for dessert. The owner is kid friendly, we saw him entertaining and offering free fresh fruits to small kids; explaining that he feels very good to see kids eating fresh fruits
