Taste of Morocco Leaves City Place, Stays in Silver Spring (Sort Of)

Taste of Morocco (or "Marocco", if you will), like everyone else, has finally decided to get the hell out of City Place. The good news for fans of Moroccan food is that they aren't planning to abandon Silver Spring entirely.

According to their website, they will shortly be reincarnated as "Fez Bistro" in a new location at 8301 Georgia Avenue. I believe that this is the space currently occupied by Langano. You may recall from a post here from last summer that the owner of this property was looking for a new occupant, and it would appear that Fez Bistro may have ended up being that tenant.

Though Langano lists their address as 8305, I believe their current space is a combination of two units. Long time Silver Springers may remember 8301 Georgia as the home of one of a handful Jerry's Subs that used to operate downtown.

This would be the second Fez Bistro, as they already operate an existing location in Falls Church. Not sure how much the menu will deviate from that which was offered at Taste of Morocco, but I'm willing to give it a shot.

(Also, no word on if they'll retain their belly dancers.)

Good for them. Liked the food quite a bit the few times I went, but the belly dancing just made me uncomfortable. Conversation was impossible over the loud music that accompanied the dancing, and it's tough to eat or talk when someone is shaking their thing right next to your food. You want to be polite and respectful to the dancers and to your dining companions, but you don't quite know where to look at such close range. (And then there were the people who insisted on tucking tips directly into the dancers' costumes. . .)

I can appreciate belly dancing as an art form, but I'd prefer a pre- or post-dinner stage show. Here's hoping they only bust out the dancers for special occasions in the new location--because that's the only way I'd go. Unless maybe they'll have takeout?

So is this the end of Langano, or are they just losing half of their space?

I agree about the belly dancing. I went there once and did not ever want to go back. The belly dancer was not very good at all and she danced way too close to the tables. It was quite uncomfortable while eating. Hopefully they will forgo the belly dancers at the new location ...

For what it's worth, when I was in (actual) Morocco, I never saw any belly dancers at restaurants.

Here's hoping this means the GA Ave. storefront gets a makeover. The poop brown paint and outdated signage don't do Fenton Village any favors. Bombay Gaylord recently had their exterior repainted (though not the 2nd story), so I really am hoping the trend continues....

Oh, and I hope Langano's considers moving into the Taste of Morocco or neighboring old Ruby Tuesdays space - I think enough loyal customers will follow and the AFI/Fillmore crowds will make the location quite successful. Also, they won't be in direct competition with a zillion other Ethiopian restaurants within a block of the GA Ave. address.

P.S. Shitty Place - you're headin the wrong way.

Has there been any inclination of advancements with City Place? I've been in the area since 2007 and I really haven't seen much of anything outside of the wishes of commenter's on this blog.

A TD Bank is opening in the former Ruby Tuesday space

Doesn't TD Bank count coins free? Woot!

I'm glad Taste of Morocco will still be in the neighborhood. The filled circles of fillo (never can remember the name) are awesome. So is that chicken with the pickled lemon.

Great...just what the area needs...more banks. They are almost as bad as the wig shops & nail salons.

It is a good thing that TOM is moving to GA ave in that location.

Mobile phone stores are worse than banks, IMO.

At least cellphone stores try and draw people in (e.g. bright colors all over the visible interior of the new AT&T store/active streetfronts). A bank would never go out of their way like that. Not to mention it's a whole lot easier to repurpose a cellphone store down the line than a bank. Oh well - the ruby tuesday's space being filled by anything is a win in my eyes.

Oh god, people, stop whining. A major global business (TD Bank) is coming to Silver Spring and providing jobs and a service to the community because they think there's money and profit to be had here - OH NOEZ!!

It's so annoying that people in this area (DC, not just MoCo) complain about every single new business opening up. News flash - just because *you* personally don't plan to use a business doesn't mean it's not useful.

In just the past couple of years, DTSS has gotten Nando's, the Fire House place, a new sports bar, a renovated Safeway (such as it is), a couple of new restaurants on Colesville, the Greek Place on Georgia, Olazzo, the bar in the former tiki place, etc. The area is also getting a new music hall (which people enjoy complaining about already) and will probably get a bunch of other new businesses once they build the transit center.

This is all good news. Yet half the posters on here seem to be oh, so disappointed that they're not opening up a Trader Joe's on every block. Get over yourselves.

I have lots of friends who come up from the District to Silver Spring because there's so much to do here - good movies, great restaurants, cool bars, etc. Why do so many people feel the need to complain about everything?

I agree! Anything is better than an empty storefront.

It seems to me the gist of the comments so far for this post is:

I was actually wondering why there wasn't a TD Bank location in downtown Silver Spring since they've been popping up around the metro area like wildflowers. Banks don't bother me, good stable business is a good thing for Silver Spring. At least we know that we have something that will not close in a year or go downhill. I do however wonder why downtown Silver Spring does not have a decent STEAKHOUSE. Wouldn't mind a Morton's or dare I dream, "FOGO DE CHAO"

What about Ray's The Classics?

I've never been to Rays, what, they have good steak there? All the same, we still need a notable steakhouse

Anonymous said...

Yeah, Ray's makes top restaurant lists all over the place. You should check it out. Oh, and it is a steakhouse (and certainly more notable than your run of the mill national chains - ruths, morton's, etc.), in case that was unclear.
