Kojo in YOUR Community

In case you missed the taping at the Civic Building last night, you can listen to Kojo Nnamdi’s “Kojo in the Community” Silver Spring show today at noon on WAMU 88.5 or online. If you’re interested you can review the live tweets made by myself and others at the taping.

The show featured topics that will be quite familiar to readers of this and other Silver Spring blogs: skateboarders, small businesses being threatened by the big bad chain restaurants/stores, the Fillmore, etc. Incredibly, there was not a single mention of the library bridge during the entire two hours, however The Silver Spring Zombie Walk (one month from tomorrow!) did get a mention, so my primary objective for the evening was accomplished.

Uncharacteristically, Kojo mistakenly stated that Silver Spring was in PG County not once but twice, although in his defense he wasn’t 100% wrong: the 20903 Silver Spring ZIP code extends into PG, if barely.

There was a lot of talk about the “youth” and how they weren’t consulted in planning the redevelopment of downtown Silver Spring. I suppose they should have held charettes in kindergarten classrooms ten years ago to determine what five-year-olds would want to have in Silver Spring when they were teenagers. We probably would have ended up with moon bounces and ball pits. (Actually, that sounds pretty awesome.) When I was a kid we had nothing in downtown Silver Spring. Nothing. There was a run down McDonald’s primarily frequented by homeless people and where the salads gave you typhoid fever. If you wanted something to do, you took the bus to Wheaton Plaza. Kids would make do and skateboard behind the Four Corners 7-11 and elsewhere. At the time, we were ecstatic at the arrival of City Place, which is of course quite amusing in retrospect.

Oh, and we also walked to school in the snow uphill both ways.

No surprise that Sk8terMom disproportionately played out her cause in a group/public setting. Where were BuildTheLibraryBridgeMom, TearDownShittyPlaceMom or StopTheFillmoreMom or PukeOnPurpleLineMom? Those people are the true backbone of the community

Anonymous said...

Oops...I meant SaveShittyPlaceMom. We wouldn't want to tear down anything that might have one iota of historical significance to .01% of the popoulation.

Anonymous said...

How can these people be "the true backbone of the community" if they didn't show up to a well attended community event? I think you are probably out of touch with the real feelings on the "true community".

April Duncan said...

It should also be noted that Sk8terMom under the mistaken impression that skateboarders were "denied even a chance to speak up" (that's a direct quote from one of her Tweets, and can also be found on the Silver Spring Skateboarding Facebook page). Was I at a different event? Because the MAJORITY of the conversation was focused on skateboarding, and included the voices of the skateboarders.

Springvale Roader said...

I'm listening to the show and even though I've lived here for 10 years, I didn't realize that most important problem in Silver Spring was skateboarding.

Libraries, green space, the crappy mall, street crime, more and better businesses...it all pales before the needs of skateboarders. Who knew?

Anonymous said...

If the youth hate DTSS so much because they weren't somehow consulted in the development process, why do they all congregate there? Seems to me that there is actually quite a bit for them to do in the area. Sometimes it seems like there are more teens/youth than adults.

wombat said...

Just finished listening... What I've learned from this is the lesson that when I listen to Kojo's shows when they're held in other neighborhoods, all I'm hearing are the people who are obsessed enough to come out and grind their particular axes in public, and it's not necessarily a reflection of the issues that most of the community are concerned about. Obvious in retrospect, I guess.

wombat said...

No, wait - it's not finished - there is another hour? I don't think I can stand it.

Skater Mom will be here shortly to explain why skateboarding is the backbone of any great place to live, how it helped the Roman's reach greatness and how it is the one ingredient missing that keeps DTSS from being as nice as other parts of the DC area.

Does there need to be more for youth to do in Silver Spring? Yes. Could skateboarding be a part of that? Certainly. Is skateboarding the only thing that young adults and kids like to do? No.

The majority of them do not skate. Even if we built the greatest skate park ever, it would not meet the needs of the community. Silver Spring does need to give kids more to do, and a skate park would certainly help, but to focus this discussion on skating alone ignores the wants and needs of the vast majority of young people.

Beyond that, Silver Spring has a lot of other needs. And many of those needs are for the adult -- tax paying -- part of the population. Teenagers and tweens do a lot of loitering in DTSS, but very little to actually stimulate the economy. In fact, they keep away people who want to spend money. That doesn't mean we should ignore teenagers and tweens, but I'd hardly say their recreational needs (we do spend a lot for them to get a world class education) should trump everything else.

To ignore making our roads safer for pedestrians to focus myopically on skateboarding is insane. To ignore getting more green and open space for all the residents of Silver Spring to instead focus on skaters is crazy.

Silver Spring has a lot of potential, but there is much work to do. Would building a skate park be a nice thing to do? Yes. But there is so much more important, backbone work to focus on right now.

Silver Spring does not need icing on the cake. We're still baking the cake.

Fed Up and Ready to Bail said...

The "cake" will take another 25-30 years to get where it could have been 20 years ago. By then, Bethesda, Arlington and Alexandria (plus Adams Morgan, U Street, Columbia Heights and probably Rockville) will be 50-75 years ahead of us. Yes, Silver Spring has great potential but it will NEVER be realized because we will always allow the nutiest voices to rule the day and local officials will not resist them. Those of us who don't like that scenario might as well move to one of those other places and get on with life. Let Silver Spring go back to what it was in the mid-90s -- a hell hole of nothingness. As this meeting show, many would be happy with that.

Anonymous said...

Patrick...so well articulated. Thank you for a voice of reason. It's astonishing how few people can actually see the big picture.

Sligo said...

This was from the comments on the Kojo site. There is always more to the story.

"I was at the show last night and learned a bit more information about those skateboarders who were demanding to be heard during the second half.....Thought it was worth pointing out that the reason they were asked to leave the building was not because they are skateboarders. They were turned away because of their disruptive and rude behavior in the lobby of the building. They were observed pushing people away from the refreshments so kindly provided by someone, and grabbing and running away with full plates of cookies."

Anonymous said...

Fed Up,
Huh? How are those places going to be 75 years ahead of us? They're all going to have teleportation systems and microchip breweries or something?
Anyways, DTSS is different from all those places, just like all those places are completely different from one another (anyone living in Adams Morgan hates that you just lumped them in with Bethesda and anyone living in Bethesda hates that you just lumped them in with Columbia Heights, etc.).
If you don't like DTSS, then fine, move. But plenty of us like it and for good reason.

Anonymous said...

I can hardly believe it, Sligo ... rude and disruptive skateboarders?? How could that possibly be right, since we know they're never anything but angels?? And of course, their fearless leader SkaterMom is such the model of good behavior, referring to the commenters on this blog and the Civic Center staff as "bitchassness" and "player haters." (see your twitter link)

wombat said...

I just followed the link to skatermom's Twitter page and was amused to find the background image is of someone (her?) apparently skateboarding through a Metro car. I guess she really thinks that there is no place that should be off limits.

@Anonymous 4:51 p.m.: Apparently there is not only a Skatermom, but a Skatingmom (maybe with an 8 in there -- don't hold me to the (mis)spelling). Anyway, it's the latter who used the "bitchassess" phrase. Classy lady.

Terry in Silver Spring said...

One thing that struck me in the show was the skateboarder who spoke, went out to get his friends, then spoke again. He said it took him an hour by bus to get to the new skating area at Woodside. Where does he live? Not in Silver Spring, evidently.

The man developing the hotel on Fenton was nice, wasn't he?

Loved the lady from Russia who talked about a dance venue so she can tango. The person who shouted out that that's Silver Spring is right. :)

Despite the skater stuff, it was a nice show with good comments and even testimonials from people who appreciate this area as much as we do.

Sligo said...

I may be mistaken, but I believe the guy who took the bus for an hour to get to Silver Spring said he lives in Olney. Note that the county built a big skate park in Olney.

Anonymous said...

I just finished listening to both parts of the show (not sure why I subjected myself to all of it), and have a few random thoughts:

1. Does anyone actually listen to this guy's show when it's not about their city? For example, I just can't imagine anyone outside of SS tuning in to this rather excruciating program. I mean, the public comments were really all over the place, and host Kojo was not very good at focusing the discussion.

2. So much talk about what youth need/want, but the only concrete ideas I heard were a skatepark and a recreation center. On the skatepark, I am a little baffled that the kid from Olney takes a one-hour bus ride to come to SS when there's a skatepark right there in Olney. As for the recreation center, is the one in Rosemary Hills not close enough? I'm not opposed to either idea in principle; I'm just not sure that they are the best use of taxpayer dollars right now.

3. One issue that should be more on our radar screen, but which really got no mention whatsoever, is attracting jobs to SS. I think that a big issue facing us is that there are tons of people living here, but very few people working here because there are no big companies willing to come here. Honestly, I'd much rather see a big corporation similar to Discovery take over the old library space, rather than using that land for another community center or a skatepark.

Anonymous said...

The Fillmore will go a long way in attracting jobs and people to Silver Spring. That, and a Beastie Boy's reunion tour are reasons alone for supporting it. As for Skater8mom, god bless her, but she's a flake. She's doing a huge disservice to her skater brood making them sound like Cuban Political dissidents. What about bacci ballers? Where's there park? signed, Bacciballerdad

Anonymous said...

Sk8ter mom is so proud of herself because she is "all over the blogs", but really that's just people saying how obnoxious she is. I was neutral towards any skate park idea, but now thanks to her I am actively against it.

Anonymous said...

Is it time for all of us to move on and do what Sk8terMom really wants us to do? Ignore her. No more replies. Unfriend her on FB. Cut our Twitter ties. Just let her rant into cyberspace's vast nothingness.

Terry in Silver Spring said...

DTSS has NOAA, Discovery, and United Therapeutics. Those are some good, stable employers. The Ecological Society of America has offices here, too, but it's a smaller office, iirc.

Evan Glass said...

To Anonymous @ 11:20pm -- I mentioned the need for more jobs during my comments toward the end of the second hour, though it was more focused on the smart growth aspect of needing to balance the bounty of new residential buildings with the lack of commercial offices. It would be great if newer residents had more opportunities to work in DTSS, alleviating the need for cars.

Springvale Roader said...

"Honestly, I'd much rather see a big corporation similar to Discovery take over the old library space, rather than using that land for another community center."

As a resident of the Seven Oaks-Evanswood community, I am happy to say, thanks, but no thanks to that terrible idea. Our community does not need further encroachment by huge buildings, which is what a corporation would do. On the other hand, our community organization has discussed the library site and strongly supports it being converted into a rec center.

Patrick Thornton said...

And now nimbyism has showed up on this thread.

"I like Silver Spring improving, just as long as it's not in my back yard."

Springvale Roader said...

"NIMBYISM." That was an utterly predictable response, and one based on ignorance of other peoples' neighborhood.

Patrick Thornton said...

Your neighborhood is Silver Spring.

Tell us why having a business there would be a bad idea? There is already a park near by that location. Why would it be logical to further stack more recreational space there, instead of placing a rec center or using those dollars for recreational goods in another part of Silver Spring that is underserved by recreational space?

Springvale Roader said...

"Your neighborhood is Silver Spring."

Nonsense. You may as well say, "Your neighborhood is Montgomery County" or "Your neighborhood is the world."

My unincorporated entity is Silver Spring. My neighborhood is Seven Oaks-Evanswood. Woodside Park is our adjacent neighborhood. Both are comprised predominantly of single family homes. Placing large, business district-sized buildings in the middle of our neighborhoods will destroy the character of both places, and both neighborhoods are already under pressure from developers who wish to engage in high density developments that are entirely inconsistent with our neighorhoods.

You talk about improving Silver Spring. A recreation center on the old library site will improve Silver Spring, and is easily accessible to many of its residents. Right now, downtown Silver Spring and its nearby neighborhoods lack a local rec center. You are also confused about the difference between parks and recreation centers. Parks are green spaces with trails, tennis courts, etc. Rec centers are places where people can take classes like ballroom dancing or guitar or painting. Rec centers have pool tables or ping pong tables or even exercise equipment and indoor courts. Have you ever even stepped foot inside a rec center?

Pablo said...

Ask yourself what services are important for your city to provide. Police? Fire? Water? Sewers? I would answer each with an enthusiastic yes. As for a rec center, not so much. If you want these facilities, join an existing club at your own discretion on your own dime. Bring me tax revenue, not social programs!

JG said...

Pablo and Patrick are making entirely too much sense for our area.

Anonymous said...

I agree that DTSS DEFINATELY needs more office space. We need to constantly strive to make SS a place to live AND work, not just a residential suburb.

But I also agree that it'd be beyond silly to plop an office building where the old library is - that's a residential area and not nearly close enough to the metro for anyone commuting to SS. Multistory buildings shouldnt be built very far east of Fenton so long as there are plenty of low-density buildings in DTSS that should be razed.

Anonymous said...

someone wrote "razed". be careful, someone might call the library "historic" and then we'd all be screwed.

Sligo said...

Smart Business for DTSS said...

I grew up in this area and I was a skater. We had $0 dollars spent on any kind of skateboarding amenities and we had just as much fun and didn't harass others with our sport. (We actually had a 12ft ramp we built in the woods behind White Flint) So when I hear all this complaining from a very small group of ungrateful kids and a crazy mom it makes me sick.

I wish more would be said about the positive growth that is coming to SS. The Fillmore alone will create all kinds of opportunity for small business to grow and hire more people. Not to mention the amount of dollars dropped into our local economy every night there is a show. Smart business growth is what we need.

PS- here is a new FB page for the Fillmore:

The Filmore is making some progress finally. Have you been by there on Colesville lately? A wooden construction barrier is up over the doors. I'd be nice to see that old department store finally put to use.

She says she is a web developer/ internet marketer but her site is dead and there is no evidence that she even has a job. (and trouble maker and name caller is not a job.) So with no job where does she come off asking for our tax money to be spent on her and her kid. She just wants an empty lot to skateboard in? What planet does she live on that people just give away free lots to skate in?

I feel sorry for her because she is obviously lonely and her only friends are a bunch of her daughters friends.

Wow you guys are getting brutal. I'd like sk8termom to be less in my face, too, but now the conversation has gone into serious personal and public attacks (on both sides). Simmer down people, it's JUST skateboarding.

I agree and disagree. It is just skateboarding, but this woman is trying to secure rather large tax dollars for her pleasure without giving anything back. It seems like she is just a leech and if I can quote someone earlier(nimbyism)... not in my back yard. I pay my taxes, own a home in Silver Spring and vote. So before I get comments on my nimbyism remark I have earned the right to speak out. Have you sk8termom? If so, if you are a hard working tax payer and home owner in Silver Spring then more power to you!

PS- The camel toe comment was funny

Anonymous said...

Now all you skater-haters you can't call Sk8termom childish AND laugh at the camel toe pic....that would be hypocritical. I say don't call her childish and 'enjoy' the pic.

You can call her out on redundancy in her screen name. She could have left out the t since 8 includes the sound of the t. On purely texting shorcut etiquette, her screen name should be Sk8erMom.

Anonymous said...

"You can also run her name though the MD Case search database.....one restraining order (withdrawn)"

Wow I can see this on either side of the fence. I could see her as being unstable and stalking someone as well as someone having enough of her and going over the line.

Also there is a difference between a sense of humor (camel toe picture) and nanny nanny boo boo (OFP Old Fart Patrol as she calls it on her blog).

BTW- this is the most activity I think I have ever seen on this blog. She must really be irritating some people.

Patrick Thornton said...

Everyone calm down. This is getting a little out of hand.

I think sk8termom's priorities are out of whack with the vast majority of the communities, but we really don't need to know about everything in her personal life. Ultimately, whether or not sk8termom is a Web developer or not or a tax payer or not is immaterial. Do we need a new skate park in Silver Spring? If so, where should it go?

And then, where does it sit in our list of priorities? Silver Spring isn't one skate part away from perfection. What other projects would we cut to make way for this skate park?

These are real and serious questions that we'll have to confront in the coming years. With the terrible economy, I don't see a skate park at the top of my list anytime soon. We'll be cutting back in Montgomery County, not spending more.

I will say this: If you really want a skate park or something else in Silver Spring, try going about it in a more professional manner. Poor messaging can turn would-be supporters away.

Patrick Thornton said...

I'd like to point out that it is untrue that skateboarders aren't asking for money. If, as I understand correctly, they just want a lot to skate in (they would be content with nothing in it?), that still doesn't take away from the fact that land is worth money, especially near the metro in the 20910 zip code.

To say that asking for a valuable piece of land isn't asking for money is crazy. That's a piece of land that could have housing on it, restaurants, shopping, office space, etc. All of that would contribute to the local economy and tax base.

Any piece of land near a metro station has quite a bit of value, especially long term as America moves away from cars and more towards dense, walkable neighborhoods.

It might be reasonable to ask for a random lot in Montgomery County that isn't really close to a metro stop and that doesn't have much development around it, but to act like land within walking distance to the Silver Spring metro station is just free isn't reality based.

Silver Spring and all urban areas need parks and green space because they benefit everyone and they add to the value of an area (without them, you'll really struggle to attract and keep middle class families). A skate park is an activity for a minority of the population. That's fine, but keep that in perspective when asking to be handed an expensive piece of land for nothing.

It doesn't help that one of the recent proponents of a skate park in DTSS was from Onley. We don't give away valuable land for free so people from other communities can use it. Also, our job is not to make up for the deficiencies of other communities.

Anonymous said...

Patrick -- I agree wholeheartedly with your comments. That is why I I think it would be absurd to build a skatepark at the old library site, for instance. That land is way too valuable.

But just one correction -- Olney may have many deficiencies, but a skatepark is not among them. Olney has a huge skatepark.

My guess is that the reason that the Woodside skatepark gets such heavy use, probably from people who live quite far away from Silver Spring, is that it is close to a downtown area that is very popular among teenagers because of the movie theater and abundance of fast-food restaurants. That is probably also why they continue to push for a skatepark close to DTSS, not just anywhere in Silver Spring.

Anonymous said...

Maryam Balbed is just a quick news story for the press who is hard up for a story. No really takes her seriously when she demands a multimillion space so she and 10 kids can wheel themselves around on a board with wheels. As is was said earlier, she and those kids should be grateful they have a skate park at all. I like to rock climb but you don't see me acting like a lunatic, creating blogs to call people names and crying like an infant so the county will build me a climbing wall in a local park so me and 5 friends can have fun.

Maryam Balbed needs to grow up and start to live in reality and we need to stop talking about her so she will go away. Does anyone know if she even lives in Silver Spring? One article had her with another kid from Olney...

Jill said...

I was inclined to be behind Sk8terMom's efforts--at least until the attacks turned personal and vicious.

But, as a grownup and a realist, I'm curious about how Sk8terMom would address some of the more concrete issues relevant to a skate park.

I went to her blog, hoping to find out how she proposes the county handle issues of liability, maintenance, security, etc. for a skate park, but it isn't really helpful on these points. She claims, very briefly, not to have asked the county for any money--only for the land--but sadly, the rest is just vitriol. (Not to mention that land=money, especially in DTSS.)

Even if it were only a question of land, you'd still need to maintain the space, ensure that the county was protected against liability for injury or death, and provide security for the kids who are skating there. She says they'd build the structures themselves (without specifying who "we" are)--but wouldn't the county need to ensure that the park was maintained properly so that their liability insurance would still cover them?

I'm wondering if perhaps Sk8terMom is proposing that the county turn over a piece of land to a group for a private skate park? It isn't clear whether she wants it to be a county park or a private park--and if private, who would assume the liability and costs. If public, then there would inevitably be costs involved--in spite of her assertions that "[s]kateboarders in Silver Spring never asked for any county money."

Again, I really really want to support her efforts to give kids a place to skate, but I need more than anti-OFP rants to help her make the case! RIght now, Sk8terMom isn't helping her cause--or her kids'--with juvenile cartoons and ad hominem attacks.

I'm really curious to know how she'd address these more concrete issues. I'd love to see her post a full and reasoned proposal on her site, addressing those issues I mentioned above--and maybe even link to it here? Perhaps those who are mocking her can better evaluate her arguments when they're made in a calmer, more rational manner. (Help me help you, Sk8terMom!)

[And apologies to SSS readers for the Thomas-Hardman-length rant!]

Anonymous said...

Can we all just stop talking about her? The more you address her the more relevant she becomes and she is really irrelevant. We have real issues like $1m dollars getting spent on a bridge that does nothing to help a way over budget project.

Patrick Thornton said...

Valerie Ervin just sold our Downtown Silver Spring.

I sent her a letter urging her to reconsider. If she pushes for this, and it actually happens, she needs to go. Well she needs to go regardless, because pedestrian bridges could destroy any progress towards urbanity that Downtown Silver Spring has made.

Those of us that actually live in Downtown Silver Spring know how bad the traffic is currently. And yet, here is our own council member supporting a proposal to encourage even more car traffic! Unbelievable.

I thought the Purple Line was supposed to come right to the library. With all that public transportation right by the library, why exactly do we need to encourage more car traffic? Easy. We don't.
