Silver Spring News 'N Notes

- Up in SSINO yesterday, a guy robbed a bank while sporting a burqa.

Upon first hearing this story I was somewhat skeptical that the perp was actually wearing an authentic, honest-to-God, Mullah Omar-approved burqa, figuring witnesses just likened his outfit to one. However, based on the surveillance footage that was released this may actually be the case. He gets points for originality, but it’s not quite up there with a Darth Vader costume.

- I can't believe how much ink (or bits and bytes, as it were) has been expended on Silver Spring skateboarders lately. I guess August is just a really slow month. Remember back in '03 when they constructed a half-pipe on Georgia Avenue and Tony Hawk did a skateboarding demo? Seems kind of surreal in retrospect.

- I read with amusement this story about Monterey Park, California's Atlantic Times Square development, which is essentially their local version of DTSS. The Monterey Park city council is dissatisfied with the regional chains the developer is bringing in and is demanding that he get commitments from more national chain stores and restaurants.

Now, can you imagine if Montgomery County councilmembers demanded that DTSS have more national chains? People's heads would explode, and I don't even mean that in the figurative sense. They'd have to hire an army of crime scene cleanup workers to pull the skull fragments out of the ceilings and walls of homes in the more liberal neighborhoods of Silver Spring.

- Don't forget, Maryland's tax-free shopping week ends on Sunday. Too bad there's nowhere in Silver Spring at which I'd shop for clothes. At least women have a few options around town. And hey, Rostas is coming back.

- Greater Greater Washington deems Veterans Plaza "worthy of The Turf's legacy".

Ain't that the truth? A whole mall with nothing in it for adults, and a Men's Warehouse that is perhaps a good place to buy socks.

However, for all your burqa needs, it looks like SS must be the place.

That was a nice article on Veteran's Plaza. I like that in the photo the band has oriented in the direction I'd hoped, with their backs to the skate rental room and the BajaFresh building.

I'd been one of the people worried that the Plaza would be a concrete wasteland only used by skateboarders and the homeless. I'm happy to admit that I think I was very very wrong. The Plaza is being used and it's a surprisingly pleasant place, even considering the concrete.

Are they sure that's the robber? I don't see a skateboard.

Hey Sligo -- Just FYI, Sk8er Mom thinks that you and many others in our community are "ignorant idiots," and she "despise[s] Silver Spring."

Just thought you'd like to know, even though I'm spilling even more ink (bytes?) on skaters.

I wonder if some people even read the posts beyond the title because their responses seem disconnected from what is actually written.

Dan Reed over at JUTP thinks you're a fool, too, since you don't believe skaters should be pacified at Veterans Plaza. Frankly, I used to really enjoy Dan's blog, postings, and perspective, but with his exposure and recognition he has become an arrogant pontificator. Earlier in the summer I met him at Fenton Street market during the charrette sessions for the future of DTSS. Instead of actively engaging with other, he talked incessantly of what HE thought. What a huge letdown that this was the famous young man from Just Up The Pike. He's actually a young kid who, while very talented, has a LOT to learn about the real world. He will, like the rest of us, learn by experience.

Dan is all about recognition.

Regarding skateboarders, I have noticed that since the ban went into effect, a lot more people have been congregating in the rink space for concerts, and the entire plaza itself seems more relaxed and used by a more diverse crowd.

There is a place for skateboarders: on the streets, just like the kids on bikes and roller blades, or in a dedicated skate park.

So far, so good.

Springvale,

I noticed the same thing. More people and a wider range of people in terms of age and social group (chatty teens, families with kids, etc)

I just did 2 more interviews today, so there will be even more 'ink' on this story soon ;)

And John, let me help you out here -- here's a direct link to our Silver Spring Skateboarding fan page:

Hopefully the people who interview you are actual reporters who talk to other people and visit the Plaza now that skateboarding is banned. I was in DTSS again tonight and the Plaza was in heavy use, even with the crummy weather.

Yes Terry, I was interviewed by actual reporters who talk to other people. But these stories are not about Veterans Plaza, but about the 3,000 or so Silver Spring kids who skateboard.

That's great, SkaterMom. I hope your kids and their friends find appropriate places to skate where they aren't damaging private or public property. I also hope your kids are safe doing, both from the bad element in their sub culture and in general.

Come back by DTSS sometime for something other than skateboarding. It's a nice place.

3000 kids in Silver Spring skateboard? Does that include casual skateboarders who like to cruise down the street in addition to the ones who like to perform stunts, or is it 3000 of the latter? And, do all 3000 like to come downtown to skate, or are they spread throughout the entire Silver Spring area?

If they all want to skate in DTSS, then that's one hell of a skate park MoCo will have to build. And that's fine, though like ice rinks and swimming pools, it might require passes or other fees to help build and maintain the property.

I just saw the movie Kick-Ass last night and now every time I read Sk8termom's screen name I will think of her dressed as one of those wanna-be superheroes (she rides into veterans plaza on her skateboard and shows those skater-haters she means business). If you've seen the movie, you know that won't be pretty.

That's a great idea, actually. How many of the kids (or their parents) would actually pay? It probably depends on the quality of the park. Make it amazing, then charge them to get in and they pay for the wear and tear they cause.

@Anonymous 2:29 -- It could happen.

I like the idea of having a fee so that someone is supervising and enforcing rules. For instance, if the skaters are doing serious tricks, shouldn't they be wearing helmets?

This is apparently what the Olney Skatepark does -- a full-year pass costs $75, and more for non-county residents. There are rules, including that helmets must be worn and that skaters must be fully clothed (sorry, skaters, we don't like seeing you shirtless; that goes for the runners I see around SS as well).

It would also certainly help to keep the criminal element away.

There was a private skate boarding park in DTSS when much of the land was in limbo. I think it was about 15 years ago. It was relatively popular and, also, inexpensive.

I'd think setting up a for-profit skate board park in DTSS would be too costly (how many of those 3,000skaters would actually pony hard dollars.) And, I'm not 100% sold on public money being used to support a sport so few people participate in. But, I'd think a public/private park might be an idea that could garner some support.

Sk8er mom has lived in downtown S.S. much longer than most of the yuppies comlaining on this message board. Just leave the poor old lady (49 years old)alone and let her tend to her twin daughters. I have seen her and her kids grow over the many years I have lived here. She seems to be doing nothing wrong. In fact she seems to be keeping lots of te real trouble makers in check.

As far as Veterans Plaza goes, I think its a great placefor little kids to go. My 2 year old loves to run around there. Its a great place for little ones to burn off energy before bed.

LOL @ "leave the poor old lady alone"!

Thanks Brian, but I don't have twin daughters, just one daughter and one son, who is now in college :)
