Silver Spring's Secret Theater - Revealed

Awhile back, I wrote about Silver Spring's "secret" movie theater and how great it'd be to refurbish it and run it as an independent theater showing cult films, etc. Out of curiosity, I emailed the building's management company earlier this year inquiring as to the theater's current condition. I received no response.

Thanks to an anonymous urban-exploring informant, however, I now have interior photos of the defunct Capri Theatre to share. Doesn't look great (no seats!), but a little drywall could do wonders. The layout of the theater isn't optimal - the seats in the back of this pre-stadium seating theater probably wouldn't have the best view of the screen, but hey, I wouldn't expect to find the Majestic down there or anything.

Very cool, and better yet: we have found the perfect location to survive a zombie attack (at least for awhile).

Think about it: we could watch zombie movies to pass the time.

Having worked at University of Maryland's Hoff Theater(Thanks!) in the 90s (pre-remodeling), I know that a little drywall and paint does do wonders!

I would love a small independent theater that doesn't charge $10 a ticket. Would be cool.

And Zombie movies would be a good way to kill time while waiting for end of days. It's like a tutorial really.

I would rather pay $20 to watch a move in this theater in its current condition than pay $10 to watch a movie at the Majestic.

Very cool shots, always love pictures of abandoned places…

Also, I agree 100% with Corona.

Wouldn't this make a much cooler location (and far cheaper to renovate) for the Fillmore?

Sligo said...

I think the Fillmore needs to be quite a bit bigger than this place.

Clancy said...

My next question would have been, "How big is it?" Is it just the one screen?

That's too bad, an underground music venue would be pretty cool.

Sligo said...

What you see here is pretty much it.

where is the concession stand? Wouldn't mind bringing my own lawn chair for $1 films there but I NEED the heady smell of popcorn in the air.

Sligo said...

If I recall correctly, the small concession stand was at the bottom of the escalator. That area isn't pictured.

It would be so great if this theater came back!

I remember seeing Trial of Billy Jack here in the 70's!!

If it opens again we need to have a Billy Jack Film Festival.

Everyone could were cowboy boots and claim to be pacifists. Then if someone is talking in the theater during the movie. Off come the cowboy boots and out comes the Woop ASS!!

Gotta love Billy Jack!

I'm about 80% sure I saw Empire Strikes Back here. Could have been a re-running of Star Wars, too. Couldn't have been older than 4 or 5.

Cinema and Drafthouse? Wheaton's loss Silver Spring's gain.

This would be a great location for a gay bar.

Vagrarian said...

Looks good to me. Drape the walls in red velvet, put up a few gargoyles, and call it the Movie Crypt. Although yeah, it does kinda also strike me as a possibility for a gay bar, if such a thing could exist in MoCo.

You wouldn't know it from the outside, but there's a gay club in a Wheaton strip mall next to Paul Kee Restaurant.

Springvale Roader said...

Hey Chippy, I got some bad news for you. I'm gonna take my right foot, and I'm gonna whop you on the left side of your face, and you wanna know something? There's not a damn thing you're gonna be able to do about it.

Well, not really, but a Billy Jack festival is a great idea.

Vagrarian said...

The Wheaton gay bar...opened as De Lounge and later known as Rehab...has closed, to the best of my knowledge, unless someone else has it going under another name. Time for a field trip?

I saw Challenge to Be Free there when I was a kid.
It was strange place

From Pershing Drive...can't log in.

I saw something there too back in the '80s. If I recall correctly, which is debatable since there was a lot of alcohol flowing in the '80s, it was some kind of karate or kung fu flick. Not in English. Badly dubbed.

I'm currently working in the building above the abandoned theatre, and I think the building is under new management as we are doing a renovation of the lobby. I discovered this theatre last night and it is fascinating to say the least. The building is called Montgomery Center. Maybe you could try to contact the owner again.
