Hump Day News 'N Notes

No, I have not succumbed to the Swine Flu. Rather, I have been away on vacation (not in Mexico). And lazy. Anyhoo, here's a few random Silver Spring tidbits to digest whilst I re-motivate myself.

- My current favorite Silver Spring restaurant, Ghar-E-Kebab, is starting to get noticed outside the community. This past Friday, the Post had a writeup of the small Indian/Nepalese restaurant on Wayne avenue. Let's hope the new publicity doesn't lead to smaller portions and higher prices like it has with certain other local restaurants that shall remain unnamed.

Damn, just thinking about the smell of the place makes me feel the need to eat there tonight...

- On the subject of food, SoCo Eats has a review of the new pupusería on Georgia Avenue. I really love to say the word "pupusa". Completely off topic, but I remember many years ago when the Pizza Movers in Langley Park closed and the new tenants covered over the "pizza" portion of the sign and made it read "Taco y Pupusa Movers". To this day the name of that place still makes me laugh for some reason. (Pupusas are fine and all, but for goodness sake, someone please open up an empanada joint.)

- Unfortunately, there will not be a Crafty Bastards show in Silver Spring this year. Those bastards! Instead there will be something called the "Handmade Mart" on May 31st. The description of the event sounds an awful lot like Crafty Bastards, so I guess it's a wash.

- Someone got stabbed this morning at the Silver Spring MARC station. Nice.

- Don't miss out on this year's Free Comic Book Day at Alliance Comics on Fenton.

- Need a hockey fix before this Saturday's Caps-Penguins game? Check out the final showing of Slap Shot this Thursday at the AFI.

Ghar-E-Kebab -- the people are nice, but the food is so bland. Where is the spice? Guess you have to go to Langley Park for that....

Really? I prefer it to Udupi Palace, which it has pretty much supplanted in my restaurant lineup.

Actually I prefer to buy my comics in Wheaton at Barbarian, but thanks for reminding me that FCBD is this weekend.

I haven't tried Ghar-E-Kebab but I agree that Langley park has some awesomely hot food like the Chicken Vindaloo at Tiffin.

Oh, and thanks for mentioning Big Greek Cafe. That place is awesome.

I just read a comment on the flightless waterfowl's blog that the Big Greek Cafe has closed. True?

The ol' ball & chain and I also came to the conclusion that Ghar-E-Kebab has supplanted Passage to India as our favorite Indian restaurant in this area, though we still haven't tried Rasika.

P.S. To Anonymous up top: Ghar-E will spice things up if you ask them. In fact, they made me a vegetable vindaloo that was *almost* hot enough for me, and when I admitted that to them that, they said just ask and they would make it even hotter next time.

P.P.S. Welcome Back, Sligo!

Some co-workers mentioned Big Greek Cafe was closed, so I called them up, and was told it was temporarily closed while an air conditioning problem was taken care of. We'll have to wait and see.

yes, lets hope they don't go the way of Mandalay

Springvale Roader is correct. Ghar-E-Khebab is great, but you have to specifically ask them to spice things up or it's a little bland for my taste. Then, you have to reassure them that you are not going to complain about how hot it is, haha.

It can be a little jarring since most people aren't used to having to ask for that at indian restaurants, especially when they order traditionally spicy dishes.

It really is an excellent restaurant and the service is lovely.

I'm Indian--come on. If I say spicy, I mean it. They still give it to bland. I've tried GEK 3 times. Never again.

Anonymous,

Have you found a place that serves truly spicy Indian food? The only place that really did it for me was some dive in New York City, but that's a bit far to go just for food.

I have the same problem with Thai restaurants, even when I walk in with a piece of paper requesting Thai-hot food, writtein in Thai. The only solution so far is to make my own curry at home.

I find that Indique in Cleveland Park has pretty hot food. The vindaloo made me cry.

Yup - nice people, their kid is in my kid's class at Sligo Creek Elementary (the one behind the old Blair). And they'll fix the food hot if you want. Just ask. And they still care a lot about their food, unlike some of the Langley Park places.

I found a bigass roach in my GeK takeout vindaloo recently--my first time. Won't stop me from going back, but it was quite unappetizing. I didn't check to see if the roach was spicy.
