Someday a real rain will come and wash all this scum off the streets.

I was hoping something interesting would happen in Silver Spring to shake us out of these news doldrums, but this isn't exactly what I had in mind.

This afternoon there was an armed robbery of a variety store on University that was followed by the carjacking of a Comcast Cable van (!) near the intersection of University Blvd. and Piney Branch Road. I know people hate the cable company, but this is insane. It sounds like a mission from Grand Theft Auto.

I've said it before - that is the worst part of Silver Spring. Whenever there is a really violent crime like this one (like, say, a machete rape), it usually occurs within a couple blocks of the intersection of Piney Branch and University. How much do we have to pay PG county to take that area? Can we at least change the name of the neighborhood so "Silver Spring" is not always in the crime headlines? It's bringing the whole town down.

That area wasn't always such a wretched hive of scum and villainy. When I was a kid there was a duckpin bowling alley, Baskin-Robbins, a movie theater and other fun stuff, but now I wouldn't venture there at night. Hell, even the Long Branch library is a gang battleground these days.

It amazes me how Langley Park can sustain a Starbucks (who goes there, really?). Also, driving through that neighborhood reminds me of one of those video games where you try not to hit one of the (SEVERAL) jaywalkers who get in your face.

Sligo, sre you disgusted by what you see as moral decay around you? What with people talking in movie theaters and street violence.

Maybe I should get a job with Barwood.

What a shame. At least they fled into Prince George's County.

On the other hand, being from Alabama originally, I'm used to having every news story about 'home' that comes out be negative. Take a look next time Alabama is in the news.

BTW, Barwood is really such a hack job outfit. I never take their cabs. You should go to work for a more upstanding organization - like the Peterson Companies that run DTSS.

This is beyond late, but should be said. I was volunteering at a reception at Long Branch Library last night (the first in a series called "Out at the Library" featuring gay authors and gay-oriented books), and had a nice chat with the manager there. According to her, there's been a sharp decline in the youth/gang violence, partly due to occasional police presence but also because of a great training program that taught the staff how to deal with teens. That program is now being used by other libraries. She told me there hasn't been an incident so far this year and that Long Branch is drawing more functions to its space. So it's not all that bad there.
