Monday Miscellany

- A man was found murdered last night in a parking lot on the 600 block of Sligo Avenue in Silver Spring.

- You gotta love this business card from Pho An. At least they got the name of the country right.

- If you feel the need to submit a form letter/petition related to a music venue and the "recommended" distribution list on the website happens to have my email address on it, feel completely free to omit me from the recipients. No, really.

- Is the Alberto's restaurant on Georgia Avenue going to open up anytime soon? The sign has been up there for a long time. It's even in the Yellow Pages ("now serving Silver Spring") I need some stone oven-baked pizza STAT!

- This is a shameless personal appeal, but could everyone go to this page on the RCN Website and request that they add the Universal HD channel? I'm not sure if it matters or not if you actually have RCN, but it couldn't hurt. Watching Battlestar Galactica in standard definition might damage my precious eyes.

Sorry man, but there's no such thing as "Chicago stone oven-baked pizza." Chicago pizza is either deep dish or stuffed. Stone oven-baked, flat crust is NYC.

I'm from Chicago, so this is a subject dear to my heart. :-)

My friend and I went over there to try it out. It was closed, but to make sure we went upstairs. Nothing there but three doors in a hall. I was curious as to what the rooms were used for upstairs, but more curious about Alberto's. If that wasn't enough, a couple pulled up looking for Alberto's. They asked us, and we let them know. We went to Armand's instead. Alberto's would probably pull in some good business, and perhaps bring some life to that side of the cluster fuck if they opened. Maybe they're trying to build hype?

BSG S1 on HD-DVD is coming out pretty soon, or so a commercial has informed me. It might be what finally pushes me into buying an HD-DVD/BR combo drive for my computer.

Anyways, you've got some time - S4 is supposed to be out in like three months.

Name of the country? They got Silver Spring SINGULAR right, which is better than most. For the life of me, I can't understand why so many people insist on making it "Springs".

Glad to see you've jumped on the BSG bandwagon! You've got until March to get the HD issue worked out, though, so keep us posted.

Aren't all television signals supposed to go out by HD beginning in February 2008? If so, then we BSG fans will be able to enjoy the final season in Hi-Def no matter what RCN does.

That might just be a broadcast requirement - not necessarily for all cable channels.

Roslin/Adama in 2008!!

And before we go lusting after new technology, please remember that these advances do actually take their toll on some.

All over-the-air broadcast TV will be digital after February 17, 2009, but digital does not imply HD.

Over-the-air digital standard definition looks better than analog, but not as good as HD. Some shows are broadcast over-the-air in HD now, and those look better than anything you will get over cable or satellite.

Thayer: By your command, that was LOL.

Thanks to you and Jacob for edumacating me on digital TV, HD, etc. Looks like I'll be going to that RCN site after all.

I made the lineup request -- thanks for the link. I'm an RCN customer, but I gave up my HD cable several months ago. If they add Universal HD I'll re-subscribe just for BSG.

Also, this might be a stupid question, but where would you park if you wanted to go to the new Alberto's? That side of Georgia Ave. just mystifies me.

There's a small county parking lot at the NE corner of Georgia and Dale Drive.

There's a larger lot on the other side of Georgia, and the parking lot in front of Staples is always empty. There is some parking in front of the building, since it has the service lane and all.

Crossing Georgia Avenue there is a risky proposition.

re: "There's a small county parking lot at the NE corner of Georgia and Dale Drive." Actually the street for one block on both sides of Georgia Avenue is called "Columbia Blvd." It becomes Dale Drive on the East Side and Seminary Road on the West. The parking lot is entered off of Columbia Blvd. There are also a few parking spaces directly in front of Alberto's and the other stores.

Just to clarify on the digital TV bit - All DC area television stations have been broadcasting in digital for years now. The analog versions will go dead in 2009 unless it gets extended again. If you have an HD receiver, you will find that there are several more stations available than on analog.

If you have ever watched an old television show on DVD on a new digital television, you will see what jacob is talking about with the quality. The picture can only be as good as the source.

What most people don't realize since everyone has hyped it up so much is that the FCC's mandated HD switch only effects over-the-air broadcasts. It has nothing to do with cable or satellite, which are private systems and can be run any way they damn-well please.

By coincidence, I had an RCN repair guy over at my house yesterday to fix a problem. After he finished I chatted him up about Universal HD and other HD channels. The guy told me that while he didn't know specifically about Universal, he said that RCN was hard at work getting new HD channels, and that we should expect good changes in the future.

I hope he's right. In the meantime I called RCN and told them that plenty of us want Universal HD and that they had better frakkin' get it before we blast them out an air lock.

For the first anonymous poster, did you notice you were quoted in the Express the other day? Of course, it sucks for me having someone call me out on my mistake then have it read by everyone on the Metro!
