Hump Day News 'N Notes

- Last week I ate at the Red Dog Cafe and ordered my favorite item on the menu, the baby mixed greens salad. The best part about this particular salad is that it usually comes with a generous amount of goat cheese and dried cherries. However, that night my salad had noticeably less of both ingredients. Unbeknownst to me at the time, the cafe had undergone an ownership change since my last visit, having been sold to Kirsten of Kirsten's Cafe. I am hoping that the cheese and cherry deficiency was just an isolated incident and not an indication that the new staff is skimping on the ingredients. Otherwise, I am going to be very disappointed. Has anyone else noticed a recent change in the food at Red Dog?

- As mentioned on the Silver Spring Penguin, Lee Development has launched a website to promote the to-be-named music venue which will eventually occupy the J.C. Penney site. The website includes an informative Q&A section about the project which addresses a lot of the complaints that I have seen here and elsewhere. What I find amusing is that the selection of photos on the main page includes a drum set shrouded in cigarette smoke, which of course is not a scene you are likely to see in any Montgomery County venue. I suppose it could also be residual smoke from a fireworks display. I can only hope they won't be booking Great White anytime soon.

- There was a police helicopter hovering around my house for about an hour early yesterday morning. Presumably it was related to an accident on 29, although I find it strange that this type of incident would require extended air support. Unfortunately, further details can't be found on the MoCo police website.

- Wait, they scheduled go-go events on Forest Glen Road and didn't expect everyone in the neighborhood to complain?

- The Gazette has an article on new and existing businesses on the Georgia Avenue corridor. The highlights (at least for me):

- Ellsworth Drive being described as a "safety bubble".
- The anticipated return of Gifford's Ice Cream, a move which I have long advocated.
- Two new hair salons opening up. Because, you know, Silver Spring is really lacking in hair and nail places...
- A new Indian restaurant. Yum.

I have had the exact same experience with Red Dog. That salad has always been a favorite of mine, and I have noticed the same things you have, and also the dressing has been way off the mark as well. Their pizzas have gone downhill as well. I don't know when the ownership change happened, but I think the food changes are more attributable to the departure a while back of their original chef. It's a shame, because it has been a real neighborhood gem in the past.

1. No Great White? How you can utter such blasphemy! Maybe the image could be construed as a bit Spinal Tap-esque?

2. Perhaps the helicopter was watching *you*. Did the thought ever cross your mind? Not that I've done anything wrong to warrant air surveillance, but my first instinct would have been to call my attorney and put him on standby.

It may be safe, but it stinks something awful - why is there a strong sewer stench in that area? Certainly turned me off from buying or eating lunch there on such a gorgeous day.

There were actually two helicopters and the extended air support mission was traffic watching. They were the NBC and Fox choppers. I was ticked off. The NBC chopper was directly over my house, and real low, for about 45 minutes. It made it impossible to get that last hour of sleep and I considered calling to complain. There was just no need for it - it was simply a one car (police vehicle) accident in front of Mrs. K's. Take your shot if you must but then move on.

The helicopter I saw had red and blue flashing lights so I assumed it was a police copter.

I thought the same thing about the lights...until I turned on NBC and realized the camera perspective was right over my house where that helicopter was. And then I thought, I don't think police helicopters have flashing lights for that purpose - it's not like they need to cut through traffic! Both helicopters (there was one over Noyes and one on the other side of Dale) had the same red and blue lights. Anyway, it was overkill and inconsiderate- particularly at 5:45 in the morning.

New businesses- what's the scoop on "Alberto's" whose sign is up on the strip with Tropical Lagoon (and the infamous porn shop)?

I live right around the corner from Mrs K's and thought the exact same thing: Please, helicopters go away and let me sleep!!

About two years ago, we had another (but genuinely serious) helicopter incident here. There was a police pursuit up Colesville and one of the suspects ran into Sligo Creek Park. Two police helicopters with powerful search lights flew around at very low altitude for about an hour. It was pretty thrilling.

They were so low that their lights lit up the inside of my house! When I stood in the back yard, it was kind of like a scene out of Close Encounters or ET...I had a little Sci Fi fantasy that I would get beamed up.

I digress :)

You should definitely call NBC or whatever surce of the copters to complain - 1 hour hovering is not needed or reasonable.

BTW what are the air right laws and minimal flight heights around here?

Where I am in East SS, I get lots of copters flying from Walter Reed and back -- usually not too low - but often and noisy enough to interrupt whatever outside conversations you may be having.

Sorry for double-posting but are you sure it is a NEW Indian place and not just the renovations to Bombay Gaylord near Georgia&Wayne. The Gazette article was not exactly detailed on that aspect.

Those are not News Choppers. They are Television Vultures (TV, for short), but do not confuse them with their quieter counterpart, the Turkey Vulture, which also circles over, and feeds off the dead. Living close to both the Beltway and the CSX railroad, I wish I had a dollar for every one of those nasty birds which have disturbed me in the early morning over the last twenty years.
