Google (finally) Updates Satellite Images of Silver Spring

If you're like me and can easily waste countless hours panning across satellite photos on Google Maps/Earth, you'll be pleased to know that the images of Silver Spring have been updated within the last week or so. Gone are the circa 2002(?) photos that show much of the "DTSS" area as empty space or parking lots. Now the area appears pretty much as it does right now.

You can even zoom in more than you could with the previous set of images. I do hope that Silver Spring is included in Google Streets, which is currently collecting photos of D.C.

(Of course, Google Maps still places my house about a block away from where it actually is...)

UPDATE: Interestingly, according to this map, Mayor Lane goes right through a building, a parking garage and three parking lots.

UPDATE #2: One of my favorite sites is Google Sightseeing, where people submit interesting things that can be viewed via Google Earth/Maps. Are there any interesting things in Silver Spring that can be viewed from space? (Note that the standards for "interesting" in this case might be a little looser than those applied at Google Sightseeing.)

Damn, that turf GLOWS!

Too bad we have to get rid of it. It could have been a good selling point for the area:

SILVER SPRING: VISIBLE FROM SPACE

'Bout friggin' time. Until recently, Google was still showing empty lots where the Silverton Condos are. Then again, the maps are still out of date. You'd think Blair Mill still goes straight through from E.W. to Georgia.

Oh, and the Metro station is on the railroad bridge over Georgia Avenue.

I saw these updates about 3 or 4 months ago on Google Earth. For some reason it took them a long time to add them to Google maps. I would have thought that the two shared a database, but apparently they don't.

Since the SS Gateway has not started construction in the images, and the buildings are still on the Galaxy lot, I' would place these images as spring 2006.

Probably from last spring. I found my parking lot on there, zoomed in, and saw my old car, which was totalled in an accident in October.

Well, the pools are open, so it must be late spring/summer.

I don't think so - looks like late Winter to me - all the oak trees are still bare -makes sense to take the pics then as you can see much more.

I dunno it looks pretty green to me, but maybe some areas have different photos. It's definitely during baseball season.

Looks like early spring to me. Some trees are green, others in the early blooming stages - as per where I was living on Dennis Avenue at the time.

And it was a Sunday morning because the parking lot at my office is nearly empty and the one at my church is pretty full.

It might be early spring. My pool is still closed (we opened it in May), but my ivy is already overgrown, so it was probably warm.

The Aurora (Eastern & 13th) doesn't look finished and there's a dumpster on the sidewalk outside of Eastern Village Cohousing. So I put it at spring 2005.
