Speed Cameras Coming to Silver Spring?

MoCo's first speed cameras will soon be installed in Rockville, and I would expect them to show up around Silver Spring sometime shortly after that. Downtown Silver Spring already has quite a few red light cameras, which hit you for $75 a pop. Admittedly, I've gotten one myself, although it was partially the fault of a jaywalker.

I think they ought to position the speed cameras on all major roads leading to the Lockheed-Martin headquarters in Bethesda, as that's who really will end up benefiting from these things. Let's be honest, local drivers will continue to speed, only slowing down when they approach a known camera location. Just look at driver behavior leading up to the camera by Carter Barron on 16th St. for an example of this.

Meanwhile, around town...

- There was a two-alarm fire last night at the Silver Spring Towers apartments.

- A Silver Springer will be appearing on the CW show "Beauty and the Geek". (As the geek, not the beauty...)

- Hello, Dave. From January 26th to March 1st, the AFI Silver will feature a Stanley Kubrick retrospective.

These are awfully telegenic geeks. I would expect more pimples and bad hair - but, then again, this guy will be the new face of Silver Spring after this airs.

They're all around us (from the Dunkin Donuts website):

2405 Reedie Dr, Wheaton, MD

6900 Georgia Avenue NW, DC

11160 VEIRS MILL ROAD, WHEATON, MD

10625 CONNECTICUT AVE, KENSINGTON, MD

8901 Wisconsin Ave, Bethesda, MD

But no Dunkin Donuts close enough for my morning coffee fix :-(

One more rant- why are guys only ever allowed to be the geeks? Oh yeah, because women are only allowed on reality shows if they look like, or aspire to look like, a beer model.

Interestingly, there was also a fire at Alexander House on Sunday, but I don't think it was very big. We were all evacuated. My partner and I spent all of our time during the evacuation at the Tastee Diner.

As for Beauty and the Geeks - can you imagine gorgeous guys giving a shit about geeky women? The show works because the women start to care about the men. I don't think the experiment would work in reverse because of the way men and women are socialized.

Don't expect red light cameras on any of the Silver Spring roads anytime soon. All the major arteries (Coleseville, Georgia and East West Highway) are state roads, not mongtomgery county property.

Used to be a Dunkin Donuts on Georgia Avenue, in the same strip mall as Kirsten's and Leeman Cleaners, but they shut it down. And remember Montgomery Donuts? So sad.

The red light and speed cameras are a STATE sponsered item. Montgomery county (City of Rockville) is the just the first (city and later county) to get them before they are put state wide.
It was stated as suych on the NBC Channel 4 local morning news show a couple days ago

I wish I had a commercial interest... it'd mean I was getting paid!

As far as being anonymous, I don't need my boss finding out I'm blogging @ work...

Did any of you Silver Spring bloggers get invited to the Washington Post blogger summit? The Raw Fischer column this morning mentioned in-town bloggers and someone who blogs about Va wineries (of all things), but no Md mention. Did they invite the Md folks or are they still using the map that says "Here There Be Dragons" to the north and east of town?

Sligo said...

No, I heard about this "summit" from somewhere else. I suppose if I wanted to, I could have showed up.

Maybe Silver Spring just gets no respect...

I'll bet you a nickel that the Md bloggers as a whole were underrepresented.

One thing they are apparently creating is a local blog page on their website.

Terry and Sligo - I was at the Bloggers summit - and yes, VA bloggers dominated AND MD bloggers got slammed - "there just aren't any good ones in MC/OG - we don't know why" - Harrumph. I'll not take it personally as they specifically meant political and neighborhood blogs - which mine is not.
I got the invite 3rd-hand -- don't know how they located the bloggers they did - but I'm thinking it was thru some VA folks' pages.

I'm not sure how many people were *actually invited* and how many asked for an invite, I'm in the latter group. I hadn't heard about the summit until a DCist post on the last possible day to request an invite.

I was invited, but didn't go. My blog isn't really about DC or MD, specifically, other than the fact that I live here and talk abut my life. My guess is that they just grepped for "DC" in people's profiles. I wouldn't take it personally, or assume it was based on content.
