Silver Spring's "Best Restaurants"

I don't know how much stock I put in this type of list, but Washingtonian's 2007 "100 Best Restaurants" issue is out, and while two Silver Spring newcomers made the list, one has been booted.

2006:

Jackie's
Mandalay

2007:

Ray's: The Classics
Ceviche
Jackie's

Could Mandalay's exclusion be due to consistently bad service? Speaking of exclusion, Ceviche should be disqualified for having their address listed as "Silver Springs" on their website:

As far as Jackie's goes, I just ate there this weekend and my meal was fantastic. I especially recommend checking out their dessert menu. I usually don't get desserts at restaurants, but everything on there looked delicious.

There are some decent restaurants in Silver Spring.

I will admit that if I want delicious food, I still trek over to Bethesda.

Jackies is OK. I still need to check out Ray's.

The most recent review from Washingtonian hints at the service at Mandalay as a problem:
From June 2006 Cheap Eats:
"The move from a snug cafe in College Park to a larger dining room in Silver Spring may have sapped this Burmese restaurant of some of its charm--service hasn't been the same since the Myint family took on a larger staff--but the kitchen still has its vigor."

How many days ahead do you need to plan to get a reservation at Ray's?? I've tried three times to call the day before (admittedly all on weekends) and have been told to come on in if I'm willing to sit at the bar. Heck with that.

Has anyone eaten at the Quarry House lately?

In November, the City Paper reported that the bar's chef pulled up stakes (steaks?). A couple of guys from Jackie's were covering the Quarry House kitchen, but the City Paper said it wasn't working out.

Has anyone had any culinary problems lately at the QH?

SHIVER ME TIMBERS!

Piratz Tavern didn't make the list? Hogwash. Everyone knows the WP is historically anti-pirate. I think I might give SHIP (Society Helping Ignored Pirates) a call. We can't stand for this kind of discrimination in SS.

If you want to eat at Ray's on a Friday or Saturday night, plan on reserving at least a week ahead - two weeks would be better. Early and late seatings might be available on shorter notice, but don't count on it.

Don't diss the bar seating! The menu is the same, and occasionally the restaurant has bar-only specials.

Damn, I need a steak right now.

Regarding the Quarry House...

I never eat there. The place is a dive but a good one at that :) I only get shit-faced on shots and pints at the QH.

RE: The Quarry House...

I've only been going there a couple months, since moving to the area, and have always found their burgers to be good - and now they're half-price on Monday nights. The quesadillas aren't too bad for a dive bar, neither are the homemade chips (alwasy good with a pint) but I've found the sandwiches to be a little hit or miss.

If Mandalay was snubbed because of poor service, then Jackie's should've been missing from this year's list. I've been to Jackie's twice, for dinner and brunch, and both times we waited nearly an hour for our food to arrive. Though the food is irresistible, I'm always disappointed with the service.

Well, Jackie's was 97th on this year's list, so they are perilously close to being knocked out.

What about Sergios? This is a fantastic Italian Restuarant located in the Hilton Hotel on Colesville Rd. Reservations are a must on Friday and Sat nights. Anyone else like Sergios?

Sergios is WONDERFUL! A hidden gem in Silver Spring.

Ate at QH last night with my family -- one waiter in the entire place (and it was FULL) -- and the food was not great. My club sandwich was neither toasted or with bacon -- two key parts of a club I didn't think I should have to ask about. Jackie needs to spend some time there working out the kinks -- they kept referring to problems w/ "the Chef" -- also, last night, no soup or chili was made because "the Chef" forgot to make it. Very strange.. . .

Sergio's is a hidden gem.

I have not had problems with service at Mandalay.

I keep trying Ceviche, but the last few meals I've had have been not so good. Disappointing.

Not that it was on the list, but while we're on the subject of Silver Spring restaurants, does anybody have strong opinions about Da Marco? I had an awful experience there a few weekends ago, but have been told that it's fantastic - what gives?

The tuna ceviche appetizer at Ceviche's is wonderful. I think the entrees are hit or miss, though. Some evenings, my meal has been spectacular and other evenings things are greasy or otherwise subpar. I wonder if it has anything to do with the chefs' schedules.
