Silver Spring News 'N Notes

- Capt. Jack Sparrow shares her account of a Secret Service bust at The Blairs early Wednesday morning.

- Milwaukee hearts Silver Spring. Or not.

- The (obviously desparate) Baskin-Robbins on 16th St. is having a "Grand Re-opening" next Thursday. While I realize that it was unseasonably warm yesterday, is late October the best time for an ice cream parlor to have their big "attract new customers" event?

Seriously though, why the heck would you ever go there, unless you got one of the "free cone" birthday coupons in the mail?? You have Ben & Jerry's and Cold Stone Creamery downtown, Moorenko's in South Silver Spring, and a few blocks down from Baskin-Robbins you've got my personal favorite, York Castle. Not that I didn't used to go to the Baskin-Robbins on Piney Branch Road all the time when I was a kid. Of course, options were limited back then. I think it's some off-brand ice cream joint now.

- Annie "Bigger Than Afghanistan" Leibovitz graduated from a Silver Spring high school. Did not know that.

- The Rock-n-Romp Halloween show is coming to McGinty's Public House from 3-6 PM on Saturday, October 28th. Admission is $5 for adults and kids are free.

yeah, I was looking through Leibowitz's new book and one of the pictures of her family was labeled "My parents, Silver Spring, MD." I had no idea, and I've been a fan of her for awhile. Interesting...

I practically grew up in the 16th Street Baskin-Robbins. How exciting! So many memories . . .

One word on the ice cream post: Parking. To go to anything downtown, you have to park in the parking garage and tromp over. Plus the one time I was at Ben and Jerry's it was not the most pleasant crew working there and frankly, it was a mess behind the counter and lots of trash scattered throughout the store. I have not returned. Cold Stone Creamery is good but verrrrry slow. Moorenko's? Again, parking problems. At least Baskin Robbins has a surface lot.

Even eliminating all the downtown stores, I'd still go to York Castle (which has a lot).

Ben & Jerry's and Cold Stone definetly have better ice cream than Baskin Robbins, but the Silver Spring stores are horrible. The Ben & Jerry's is always filthy, and they are the most inexperienced staff I've ever seen. Once I saw a fly in the strawberry tub and one employee screamed (so everyone in the store saw the fly) and then the manager just scooped the fly out, leaving the rest of the ice cream, and said 'who's next'. The cold stone is always out of ice cream. Many times I have waited in a long line just to find out they are out of all but three flavors. What's up with that? Moorenko's is definitely the best. There's a parking problem but this is a city - you should walk.

The Ben and Jerry's service is consistently horrible. Cold Stone is nasty. Moorenko is tasty but a little yuppified. And if you want a Jamaican beef patty with your double scoop, you gotta go to York Castle. Besides, where else can you get litchi ice cream?

There's a decent description of ice cream shops in the area on the Silver Spring Voice's website:

York Castle's Guiness beer ice cream is surprisingly good, as are their beef and chicken patties.

Let's see Baskin Robbins beat that!

I think Moorenkos has valet parking so you don't have to be bothered by the construction.

Has anyone tried the gelato at Kefa Cafe? The one advertised with giant banner. I have not and am curious.

Guilty pleasure confession - in summer when it is HOT in downtown SS, the fountain is broken, and I have NO patience to wait for bad service at either B&J or CSC - I go straight to ChikFilA and get the soft swerved ice cream cone. Not the highest quality you'll ever have, but price is right and it hits the spot.
