Thursday News Roundup

- Today's Post has an article on the Birchmere coming to Silver Spring. It makes me nervous the way they chose to use the word "may" in the title, though. The good news is that even Bobby Haircut is down with the plan.

- The Post also has more details on yesterday's fatal pedestrian accident.

- "America's Mayor" Rudi Giuliani stumped for Senate candidate Michael Steele in Silver Spring. (I guess in Silver Spring, he's the only mayor we have...)

What? You haven't heard of the Mayor of Silver Spring?

Of course! But since his death, there has been a leadership vacuum in Silver Spring.

Regarding the fatal accident yesterday. There was a motorcycle cop parked on the sidewalk on the southeast corner of that intersection this morning, watching people turn left from Colesville eastbound to E-W southbound.

That's a nice reactionary measure that will be discontinued after a couple days, I'm sure.

You know what I'd like to see? The pedestrian crossings like they have in England with the blinking lights on each side. When a car comes to these crossings they are required to stop if there are pedestrians waiting. It wouldn't be practical at that intersection, but at other places it'd be nice.

Like the one the county deemed uneffective and replaced along east west by NOAA?

Oh yeah, I vaguely remember that. The problem is people aren't trained to recognize that type of crosswalk, so they probably disregard it. If it was more prevalent (and enforced) they might stop for pedestrians. Then again, a lot of drivers probably don't give a damn.
