Bike Bandits in Downtown Silver Spring

This is kind of scary. From the Gazette:

About 2:55 p.m., a 40-year-old Silver Spring man was in the 8500 block of Georgia Avenue near Ellsworth Drive when the men approached, according to Montgomery County Police. They took cash from the victim and punched him in the face, and rode their bicycles down Georgia toward Wayne Avenue.

At 3 p.m., the teens, a 17-year-old boy from Washington, D.C., and a 17-year-old Lanham girl were walking on Fenton Street in Silver Spring near City Place Mall when they were approached by two men on bicycles. They patted the victims down but realized they had no property, police said. Both got back on the bicycles and rode down Fenton toward Sligo Avenue.
What the hell? People are getting robbed around the busiest part of downtown Silver Spring in broad daylight? Also, these guys are confident enough to assault someone then travel one block and rob someone else five minutes later. Where were the MoCo bike cops that I always see at the Baja Fresh? I'd like to see a "high speed chase" with bicycles. The Moose would have got them.

If you look at the weekly crime summary those bike thugs have been at this for a couple weeks. Some guy got robbed at 2pm between cityplace and AFI.
Is it just me or do the cops just hang out chatting with each other in downtown silver spring.

They eat, too.

The Moose would be looking for two long haired white men driving a white van who are disgruntled employees of Silver Spring, in their mid 20's.

Anonymous... you are dead on. DTSS has plenty of cops assigned to it, especially on weekend evenings/nights. HOWEVER, they are ALL, usually about 8 including 2 horse mounted officers, standing around and chatting in front of the theater at Fenton and Ellsworth. And I don't mean just for a little while, they literally will stand there all night long. It's such a waste of resources and tax dollars. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the police presence but have them walking around covering the entire downtown area not just the movie theater. Even if they go in packs of 2 I'd be cool with that, so long as they are doing something. Walk Colesville, Georgia, and South SS. Just do something!

The bike cops are ALWAYS at Chipotle.

Do some work... I know it's 140 out... but you chose your line of work. Discomfort for the rest of us.

Too bad there's no Chipotle in Baghdad... it would be packed.

I don't think the carnitas would go over well in Iraq.

First anonymous again-
I don't mind they chat, I goof off at work too, but when i goof off people don't get mugged or guns pulled on them, so they have a harder job. There are lots of stores around DTSS and South Silver Spring, the cops could walk in pairs and spend a little time in each store as they patrolled. Let them enjoy some AC, but actually go beyond the Chipotle and down Georgia Ave and Colesville, Maybe hit East-West

How are the Montgomery County bike cops expected to ever catch anyone, when their standing orders are to ride on the sidewalk and not on the road?

This is unsafe, and sets a bad example for everyone else. It's a typical example of MoCo's anti-urban pro-automobile mindset.
