Afternoon Notes

- The Gazette has an article on how Veteran's Field (aka "The Turf") has become a popular hangout for teenagers in Silver Spring. It would be nice to have a "green area" instead of an ice skating rink, but the Civic Center does need to be built, IMO. Preferably the area would be a little better landscaped than the uneven carpet they have now.

When I was that age, I hung out at the old Champion Billiards on Georgia Avenue playing the original Mortal Kombat while getting cancer from second-hand smoke. These kids are missing out.

Somewhat unrelated: there used to be a park down there where the movie theater is now. What was that called? It was a veteran's memorial or something (I could be wrong about this). My memories of pre-DTSS are hazy. You can still see it on the outdated photos on Google Maps. Most of the people who frequented it were either skateboarders or homeless.

- Apparently, Ray's: The Classics is THE place to dine right now.

The park was Kuhn Park. It was not a veterans memorial. It was built by the developers of City Place (Kuhn was one of the development partners) as a required amenity for the approval of the City Place project in the early 1990s.

What a waste that was, then. Not as big of a waste as the City Place parking garage, though. I wonder how much they paid for that just to tear it down 10 or so years later. It was one of the worst designed lots ever... if one person was backing out of their spot, the entire garage would come to a standstill. After a movie got out it was horrible.

I hate that green turf area. Went out for dinner last Fri night and had to walk across it and it was covered with garbage and food and it was gross. People sitting int the mess and all. I'm ready for them to yank it out of there.

Richard P. Kughn Park. I remember it vaguely - they screened movies on the lawn sometimes. I also remember never being able to read or pronounce the name. (Now, who remembers the skate park on Ellsworth, East of Maui?)

I'm looking forward to seeing some real Turf on "the Turf." It's a much better name than "Veterans' Field" because the community named it, giving them a sense of ownership of the space.

Well, kids named it "The Turf". When you start letting kids name things you end up with stupid names such as the "Washington Wizards"...
